Joined pals @BryanTing, and birthday lady @theRunetarian yesterday for the first ~16 miles of her 30 on the Skyline to Sea trail run. My first time on this trail, by the time we reached Big Basin, I felt both physically spent (on only 4hrs of sleep), and mentally exhausted from nearly five hours of navigating a new-to-me somewhat technical nearly all single-track trail. Learning from practice, finding limits from experience.
Bryan drove us down from San Francisco before dawn, to quite a dramatic sunrise and low fog on 280(2). We started ~8:15 under thick clouds and ambient white light in a quiet forest(1 📷 @theRunetarian #selfie). Two miles in we emerged onto a ridge (where there was a convenient bathroom), the mottled white gray clouds stretching out overhead to the ocean, contrasted by the fresh green grass from recent rains(3).
The scenery was beautiful the entire way, the trails narrow, the trees tall(4). Sometimes the trail would cut through a small clearing(5 📷 @BryanTing). Occassionally we’d see an odd or interesting site, like abandoned old cars from the road above, or old burned out tree trunks, cut-off and covered in green moss like giant chairs(6).
The trees got larger, thicker, as we approached and finally reached Big Basin park, surrounded by redwoods(7 📷 @BryanTing).

Sunday 1 year ago: 15km (https://tantek.com/t4yV2), #Sunday yesterday: 16mi & 4500' the day after 12mi & 2400' (https://tantek.com/t54Z2). @BryanTing and I hiked/ran a double Dipsea, starting at Old Mill Park in Mill Valley up the legendary #DipseaSteps, onto the #Dipsea #trail through Muir Woods (with a brief detour to Deer Park Fire Road) up to Cardiac Hill(1), down to Stinson Beach(2, and 3 📷 #selfie by Bryan).
We took a quick break to eat at the Parkside Snack Bar, and then started our hike/run back. At one of the viewing spots just before Cardiac the clouds were looking particularly beautifully chaotic(4). Returning to Cardiac Hill, the sky was fully overcast, and rain clouds were visible over the ocean, some already dumping onto the water(5).
By the time we had climbed down and back out of Muir Woods and up to Panoramic Highway, the sky had cleared for us again, the sun warming us and lighting our way(6). We descended back down into Mill Valley, ran down the Dipsea steps to Old Mill Park, and finished where we started. 16 miles, not bad for a day two run.

#SFRC yesterday, 12 miles and ~2500' climbed. Beautiful day, started in Tennessee Valley Parking lot, just after 08:00. Marincello trail was lined with fresh green grasses(1) from recent rains. Alta trail’s forest pretty as ever(2). Noticed a spot on SCA trail where trees on either side framed the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance(3), before running to SCA look out point for a view of San Francisco, and the sun lighting up the bay(4).
At the peak of Slacker trail, I could just make out Rodeo lagoon, and Rodeo beach(5). Running down to the beach, the sun glistened off the water, backlighting a fisherman and a few surfers(6). On the Coastal trail climb, a seemingly unreachable cove, secluded yet visible from above, with an inviting beach(7). Hiking up to Hill 88, looked back down at Rodeo Beach(8). Returning on Old Springs trail, caught a view of Tenneessee Valley down to the beach(9).
Finished the SFRC loop of the week and joined friends at Good Earth for a sandwich.

⛰🏃🏻♂️ First #SFRC of the year today, 13.5 miles ✅ Finished first full route since #ECSCA, and longest run since too! It was a struggle TBH, leg muscles still tired from Tuesday’s Tam PR (tantek.com/t54M2), and an intense Thursday Baptiste yoga class. Thanks to #running pal Whitney for keeping us going!
Beautiful day, mostly blue sky, brilliant #sunshine lighting up a clear sky(2). Ran up Fox trail to views of the Pacific Ocean among green Marin hills on either side of Tennessee Valley(1).
Almost missed a pretty purple salamander on Coastal Fire road(3) on the way down toward Muir Beach with a mix of blue & green waters(4). It was quite muddy on the descent, thick, sticky mud which we had to carefully step through & around(5).
The climb up Dias Ridge was quite a slog, alternating running and walking. Whitney waited for me at the top of the ridge line where we captured photos of dramatic clouds above and passing in front of Mount Tam(6 📷 Whitney). I looked back to take in one more view of the Pacific Ocean(7) before continuing eventually onto Miwok, back to Tennessee valley and to our start.

⛰🏃🏻♂️ This is it. #50ktraining & waiting just under a year for tomorrow’s 2nd chance @thenorthfaceECS #ECSCA 50k #trailrace. Good luck to everyone #trailrunning #TNFECS 50mi 50k marathon & relay!
Canceled last year due to smoke, I ran the course a week later (https://tantek.com/t4xf1 after rains cleaned the air) unsupported and it was the hardest thing I’d ever done.
Fitter & a bit lighter this year, I feel trained, though not as much as I’d like to be (September & October travel made it tough). Yet I know these trails, and I know my body. The air is clean this year, and the weather is looking good.
I’m focusing on finishing healthy in the course time limit to make it official. Going for smoothness over speed. Looking forward to starting with so many friends from near & far and seeing even more at Crissy field.

🌞🌳🌊🌁 #Sunday #longrun! Ran 14+ miles on tired legs.
Planned to do a half marathon after Saturday’s 11 miles of Marin trails, ended up a mile-ish more. Slow start, but drank/fueled and felt pretty strong in the second half of Golden Gate Park. Spreckels lake sparkled in the sunshine(2). Reached the beach(1) and felt encouraged to go further. Ran up to the Sutro Baths for a beautiful view(3) and thru Lands End for a clear view of the Golden Gate!(4)
Happened to look upward in the Sea Cliff neighborhood and see an old air raid siren(5). Against the deep blue sky it reminded me of Depeche Mode’s Music For The Masses:
By the time I ran up Lincoln Boulevard to the bridge, Karl the Fog had enveloped the tops of the towers(6). Ran down to the Warming Hut for another view(7) and over to Crissy Field Marsh(8).
Struggled up the final climb to the Presidio, and up to the top of Arguello Blvd, then easy cruising all the way home.
25+ mile weekend done! ✅

9 days ago, 13+ miles & 2500' at the final May #SFRC #trailrun. May had many ups & downs, emotionally & literally like this #run. Started at Tennessee Valley, ran up Miwok to beautiful green valley views (1) and distant bridges (2). Turned left onto Dias Ridge, ran freely downhill til I tripped & fell.
Somehow reacted quickly enough to roll towards the grassy edge, scraping only my right hand on gravel. Immediately got back up and kept running. Reached #Muirbeach (3), touched the #surf (4). Ran back up Coastal, down Fox, to the parking lot, just short of 13. Ran up #Marincello to finish my #trail #halfmarathon (5).
Tough but solid just two days after a Tam run, during which I also fell (down a ravine!) but that's another story.

Tam summit (#4) this morning. Chased @BryanTing once again to an uphill PR (sub-90min!), just made the 7:22 sunrise and sat on the rocks(1). Clear skies(2) from the start, faint streaks of orange before sunrise(3). Clear gradients 11 minutes before(4) sunrise, a leading orange glow 7 minutes before(5). Finally, sunrise from the door of the hut at the top(6), and a view from the rocks of the green hills below(7).
8.5 miles before 9 (2500+' climbed). Midweek #ECSCA #50ktraining session done.

Beautiful day at #SFRC this past Saturday. Practiced a few #ECSCA 50k trails: Fox, Coastal Fire, Marincello, Bobcat.
1. Up Fox taking in a westward view
2. Down Coastal Fire Road looking south, a low hanging cloud with a surreal reflection on the ocean
3. Muir Beach
4. Touching the surf
5. A furry caterpillar seen going back up Coastal Fire Road
6. Top of Fox trail before sprinting down to Tennessee Valley
7. Up Marincello looking East
8. Down Bobcat toward Alta (saw a baby snake!) with glimpses of downtown San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Sutro tower on the distant horizon.
~14.3 miles, 2900'+. Legs felt pretty good despite climbing 1000'+ at #NPSF Friday hills the day before. Finally broke 100+ miles in the past 30 days. Six weeks til my first 50k.

Starting up a steep hill in the dark was a different kind of challenge. Nothing like pushing physical limits outdoors while watching constellations fade from the sky as it turns from black to navy, to ever lighter shades of blue. The horizon lit up with a purple orange yellow gradient, until the sun pierced the cloudcover (4), bathing everything in warm light. Made it to the top (5) with a solid crew (6).
2500+' climbed in just 3+ miles to the top, then ~6 miles down for ~9 miles total before 09:00.

1st photo 📷 @butteronadonut
Workout: 5-6x1200s
I did: 8x400s (progressive + 90-120s stretches between), listening to a tender right hamstring. Took time to slowly warm it up, finished with two comfortable sub-2min 400s
Thanks again to @micheleperras for the early morning txting motivation. That’s two weeks in a row, can we make it three?

This morning was harder.
It’s one thing to wake up in daylight,
another to get up in darkness.
One thing to run with a friend,
another to run alone.
To run in daylight,
another to run in darkness.
From darkness to dawn I made it to Diamond Head, and inside the crater as the sun crested the eastern rim. Less than twenty minutes later I made it to the summit. Clear skies overhead, the sun had ducked behind a cloud layer just above the horizon.
This is my second #NP_PhotoContest entry. From the profile you’d think I was part elf.
I’m standing in the same spot as two days ago, and yet, this morning began very differently.
Alone, unmotivated, barely motivated, running, then losing nearly half an hour looking for a restroom, almost quitting and turning back, pressing on to complete a couple of miles, up to the edge of the crater, and having gone that far, finally motivated to push all the way up inside to the top.
In that moment, beyond gratitude, I felt a growing sense of self-reliance, and some relief from self-doubt.
Thanks to running with #NovemberProject, I’ve learned to get up in darkness and wear a headlamp when running before dawn. Thanks to running trails with #NPSF friends (often at #SFRC), I’ve learned to wear a buff to wipe my brow, carry enough water for the roundtrip, and pack a snack just in case.
Running alone in the dark is still a challenge. There’s always an inside voice of doubt, speaking up at even a hint of exhaustion, tiredness, or breathing difficulty. I’ve learned to live above it by listening to it rather than rejecting it. By allowing myself the option to turn around, in a mile or two, it feels heard. And when that mile or two comes, the voice is almost always completely gone, replaced by feelings of momentum and self-confidence.
About halfway to the summit I saw a #grassrootsgear orange tanktop coming the other way and met Jessie & her friend from NovemberProjectDC! A pleasant surprise among the throngs of tourists. We stopped to take a photo together.
Standing there at the Diamond Head Summit, I waited for the sun to continue rising above the clouds, still low enough to cast a yellow orange glow. Took a few photos, then ran back down, pausing on the street outside Diamond Head to appreciate the chickens, roosters, and doves snacking near the sidewalk, before running back to the beach and finding breakfast.
