finished the #InsideTrail Woodside Ramble 35k #trailRace in 7:42:58!
21+ miles for the 21st. Happy Winter Solstice!
One last dance for 2024. Drove down 101 and saw the orange sunrise between the East Bay mountains and stormy cloud cover. Made it to Huddart Park, parked, got my bib, pinned it to to my shorts, left my drop bag on a picnic table, and lined up to start just in time.
It was overcast and as we made our way up the hill, the drizzle then rain and wind began. The deep forest protected us from most of it.
The recent storms had downed a large tree which blocked part of the original course. The organizers had to re-route the 35k course (and the 55k) into a series of loops. This was my first 3 loops race!
It was harder than expected (the course changes added lots more vert) but I finished healthy, no pain, no soreness, so I'll take it, along with my second DLF trophy. I’m starting a collection.
Started the year with a rainy 30k race (Redtail Ridge¹), finished the year with a rainy 35k (with ~60% more vert! nearly 4400'). Seven races in 2024 ✅ Good notes to end on for this year’s trail racing season.

Finished my second Broken Arrow #Skyrace 23k¹ yesterday in 6:52:44! #RingDasBell
This year’s #BrokenArrowSkyrace² 23k was actually that distance! I ran 23.3km with 4557' vertical climb! In contrast, last year’s "23k" race³ was rerouted (due to weather conditions) last minute to two laps of the 11k course, where my actual distance was 18.87km with 4905' vert.
I have been looking forward to this all year, to climbing the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" ladder to the top of Washeshu Peak (8885'/2692m elevation) for the first time (since last years’s race had to skip it).
This year’s Broken Arrow is the start of the Mountain Running World Cup⁴. It’s a rare sports event opportunity to compete with the best in the sport, to literally run the same trails they do, on the same day, with the same start (there are no waves), and finish line.
Lots to write-up, for now, I’m grateful for the experience and accomplishment.
Super grateful for everyone who came out to cheer and especially my coach whose training and guidance got me here.
A few notes:
Great lining up with so many friends.
Hot day. Filled my ice bandana at the first aid station (Snow King) which made the rest possible.
Steady hydration & fueling.
Fueling timeline notes (times are my H:MM race clock times from the start)
0:00 start
1:45 ate Picky Bar
2:00 finished Tailwind in 500ml bottle
2:08 Snow King aid station, refilled bottles one with water and the other with mandarin Tailwind, filled ice bandana with ice, picked up a few Spring Energy gels
3:15 ate Awesome Sauce gel
3:45 ate Awesome Sauce gel
~4:30 left Siberia aid station with refilled ice bandana, bottles, a few Spring Snacks, ate potato chips, a watermelon slice, salt+nuun add to one water bottle, mandarin Tailwind in the other
5:05 ate Awesome Sauce gel
5:35 (-13:39) left Julia aid station with another Spring Energy gel
6:03 ate Awesome Sauce gel
6:52:44 finish
Lots of incredible views along the way. The air was clean and quite breathable even nearing 9000'. Felt a bit slower but kept going within my capacity.
Kept an eye on the time remaining before cut-off compared to my distance and vert climbing remaining and pushed steadily when I could.
Finished with just over 7 minutes to spare before the official cut-off, to friends cheering on all sides. Saw and hugged my coach after ringing the bell at the finish.
What an experience.

Ran my 12th #BayToBreakers race in 1:59:54 on Sunday 2024-05-19.
After a comedy of transit struggles to get to the start line, I jumped in with Corral C runners (my bib was for Corral B) and started with them.
Great seeing the Midnight Runners crab rave cheer gang in Hayes Valley before Hayes Hill.
Made it into Golden Gate Park, and eventually saw Vivek and David Lam making their way back from the finish.
Just before the bison paddock, I saw Paddy & Eleanor walking back as well, and stopped to briefly chat with them.
Soon after I saw Adrienne and a few other #NPSF pals running and as they stopped to say hi to Paddy, I took off to go finish.
Adrienne and friends caught up to me on the last segment before Ocean Beach, and decided to run together. After turning the corner onto Great Highway, I could see the finish line. Glancing down at my watch there seemed to be enough time to finish under 2 hours if we picked it up. I asked Adrienne if we could try for a sub-2 hour time and she said to go for it. We picked up the pace and after crossing the finish line I stopped my Garmin — it read 1:59:54.
Oddly the official Bay to Breakers results (which are not at a linkable URL) showed 2:00:07. The only explanation I have is after the first timing strip after the finish line where I stopped my watch, there was a big crowd of loitering people that made it hard to keep moving, and cross a second timing strip. It is possible the first timing strip did not register my bib chip, and only the second timing strip picked it up. I have emailed Bay to Breakers to see if they can correct it, and included a link to my Strava activity that shows I recorded the entire race on my watch.
It was a harder race than usual, despite the good weather.
There were a few things that contributed. First, I had run each of the prior two days: 5km+ at Friday night’s Midnight Runners 5th anniversary run and run/walk celebration afterwards totaling ~5 miles, and then 6.5 miles at SFRC on the trails on Saturday.
I slept reasonably well the night before the race, and having checked the news announcements about the availability of transit options in the morning, planned accordingly. When I checked the actual train arrival times, none of the MUNI trains that were supposed to be running were running. I ran down to take the MUNI bus which was supposed to go downtown, except it stopped at Van Ness avenue, inexplicably, and the driver told everyone it was the last stop.
Admittedly I was already annoyed that SF MUNI for some reason decided to stop the MUNI trains the morning of Bay to Breakers that could easily have taken thousands of runners to near the race start at Embarcadero via the Market Street subway. Having the bus stop sooner than expected was a second disappointment and discouragement.
I (and many other runners) decided to run towards the start, which was still ~2 miles away at that point.
Upon reaching the Civic Center station on Market street, we realized from the street level displays that BART trains appeared to be running normally like any other Sunday, so we went downstairs and paid for a second transit ticket to take the BART a few stops.
The BART train was full of costumed Bay to Breakers runners. Disembarking at the Embarcadero station, I jogged/ran the rest of the way around the entrance corral maze to the right spot for Corral B entrants, and joined the group waiting at the start line.
Lessons learned: I am not trusting MUNI rail or bus into downtown on Bay to Breakers race day again, despite any announcements from SFMTA. Too many years of bad experiences.
However, BART seems reliable so I plan to find my way to taking BART in the future. Perhaps by taking a bus to the 16th street BART station, avoiding all street closures.
Having missed my start corral due to the transit mishaps, I didn’t see anyone else I knew. The combination of being annoyed at MUNI’s unreliability (both in what was announced vs what was running and premature bus termination) and starting in a crowd not knowing anyone took my motivation down several notches.
Still, the weather was pleasant yet cool, ideal for a race so I ran a pace that felt good for me, and kept an eye out for friends along the course. I stopped after mile 1 for a portapotty pitstop. Back in the chaos of Howard street and then Ninth to Hayes, I saw a few folks I knew from a distance.
Seeing and high-fiving the Midnight Runners crab race cheer crew at Hayes Hill turned my mood around though, and I enjoyed the rest of the race, from Hayes Hill through Golden Gate Park.
It was my slowest Bay to Breakers yet, however first in a while that I finished with friends!
After we grabbed our medals and snacks in the finish area, I hiked/jogged back to the Panhandle, found the Midnight Runners crab rave crew keeping the party going and joined in.

This past Saturday: finished the #InsideTrail Redtail Ridge 30k #trailRace in 6:00:59.
A few notes:
This was my first trail race of 2024, and first in over 6 months, since last year’s Marin Ultra Challenge 50k and Broken Arrow 23k races in June¹. Saw pal Henri after changing into my trail shoes in the Lake Chabot Regional Park parking lot. The storms had scared many away, less than 100 showed up to the combined 30k & 50k start.
The muddy rainy adventure began when we veered off the initial paved trail around the lake and onto a rocky uphill stretch. It was mostly an out-and-back course, with a bit of a loop in the middle. On the second half of that loop there was one fork in the trail without race markings. After spending minutes taking a peek down both options, I guessed right. About a half mile later a wooden trail post validated my choice.
I kept a sustainable run/hike pace, with some sliding in the mud, stepping around many ruts and puddles of unknown depths. Slower finish than 5 years ago², yet this time with a negative split, and earned my first DLF award!

Ran my 11th #BayToBreakers in 1:47:11 on Sunday 2023-05-21, again the day after an @sfrunco.com (@SFRunCo) Saturday trail #run, but this time in the middle of a very long training run, my last before the rescheduled #MUC50k trail race. Ran over 4 miles to the start, hopped in the next race corral, ran Bay to Breakers with the colorfully costumed crowd, picked up my medal, ate a banana, ran back through Golden Gate Park, and then a bit more up city hills to round out 18 miles and 1000'.

#trailTuesdayThrowback to Saturday’s first Marin #trailRun of the year, masked & distanced on a beautiful #Junuary day. Chilly in Tennessee Valley as the sun crested the hills, poking through the eucalyptus[2]. After ascending Fox trail[3], it was warmer than any winter’s day. Nice breeze running down Coastal Fire Road[1 📷 @BryanTing] to Muir beach.
We took Redwood Creek to Miwok into the cool forest canopy, paused for a moment[4], then continued on our way.[5 📷 @BryanTing]

Seven years ago today I showed up to my first #hillsforbreakfast workout @Nov_Project_SF and ran up & down a few blocks for 25min[8]. In memory of #NPSF hills I ran to Twin Peaks today[1], 25min (or a bit less) of all uphill just to start — something that was beyond my reach back then.
Starting at Oak Street I caught a sign in a window[2] I hadn’t seen before, encouraging folks to:
* see black women
* hear black women
* trust black women
* love black women
* protect black women
* pay black women
After running up Ashbury to Clayton to Twin Peaks Boulevard and climbing to the summit & both peaks, I turned around to see a clear view of Sutro Tower, Mt Tam, and the Golden Gate Bridge from the South Peak[3]. On the return run, I spotted a pair of apparent princesses in pink dresses strolling along, brightly lit by the brilliant setting sun[4], along the adjacent road blocked to motor traffic. As I climbed the North Peak, I saw them again up ahead, strolling in the middle of the road without a care in the world[5].
Reaching the top of the North Peak, I noticed Market Street’s streetlamps had been lit, the sunset barely lighting up a few blocks of downtown[6]. Made it back to the Twin Peaks Summit as the sun dropped toward the Pacific Ocean, bathing everything nearby in orange light[7].
Ran down the hill at an easy pace, legs & feet tired after yesterday’s longer run. Grateful for regular runs up Twin Peaks, where 25 minutes is the start, rather than the whole workout.

⭕🏃🏻♂️ Last track workout of the year and third #trackTuesday in a row. Spotted new #streetArt #heart by @kate_tova(1) a block before #Kezar. Blue sky and a dry track this morning(2,3) for a warmup, 6x progressively faster 400s with a 200walk+200jog in between. Cooldown jog/walk in the area, noting a #BlackLivesMatter sign in a window(4) & BLM stencil artwork on a plywood covering(5).
Last week the rain had left the track quite wet(6), glistening in the low sun(7), lanes in the shade still wet(8) from rain the night before. Completed a “broken 600s” workout: several sets of alternating fast and slow 400 200 200 400. On my cooldown jog back I spotted a BLACK LIVES MATTER sign leaning against lavender siding, behind a few potted plants(9).
Happy to finish 2020 with a return to regular track workouts, and looking forward to continuing them in the new year.

⛰ Tam summit #13 of 2020. Started(1) just before Emma & Olivia’s time trial. Barely made it up the first road before Nick caught up leading the speed train with Paddy bringing up the caboose(2). #BlackLivesMatter signs are present in many of the yards(3) on roads up to Tam.
Part way up #Temelpa #trail *someone(s)* had decorated a fir tree with holiday ornaments!(4). The views from the summit was the haziest I’d ever seen, SF(5) and Mount Diablo(6) barely visible. Despite the haze and cold (42F), it was one of my quicker recent ascents(7). On the way down I checked PurpleAir and the AQI was 100+(8) which would normally make it too hard to run. Perhaps the trees & bushes filtered the air along the trail. I could smell wood burning stoves & fireplaces as I ran back down the road to Mill Valley. Finished my 9th Tam ascent & descent on the same steep route (AKA H.A.M. on Tam) and returned to the Mill Valley depot where I started.
Congrats @emmakayemccune on a new Tam Ascent Course Record! And Olivia on a new PR! Well done you two!

🌃🌳 March 28th, SF distancing day twelve. Spent the day inside (except to move my car) until leaving 10 minutes to midnight for a night run.
Started tracking at Frederick & Ashbury, an empty intersection, lights out except the corner 2nd floor apartment(1). Empty to the East as well, up to the dark trees of Buena Vista Park, outlined by a gray sky above(2). Continued onward to spell NO FEAR on the streets (https://tantek.com/t55q1).

🏙🌳 March 27th, SF distancing day eleven. Midday run/walk up to Corona Heights for another clear view of downtowns, San Francisco and Oakland(1). 🌳🌇 March 22nd, SF distancing day six. Later run than usual, made it to Kezar Stadium just after sunset on a mostly clear day(1). 🌁⛰🏙📰 March 21st, SF distancing day five. Ran up to Twin Peaks, North Peak, and South Peak for a clear view of Sutro tower, Mount Tam, the Golden Gate Bridge, downtown San Francisco, East Bay hills, and tiny container ships & the Grand Princess still idling on the bay(1).
There’s a third mini peak south of the two official Twin Peaks, with a beautiful field of poppies(2). At the time I’d stopped to admire the poppies on the inside of the hairpin turn up to Twin Peaks(tantek.com/t55h1). Afterwards a post-run stop at Haight Street Market for a coffee.
The day’s weekend Wall Street Journal had a photo of a nearly empty Times Square, a scene previously only imagined in disaster movies (and Vanilla Sky). The headline article described how 1 in 5 Americans were now under orders to limit their outside activity(3).

⛰🌁 March 20th, SF distancing day four. Ran up to Tank Hill for the clearest views. Distant sights like Mount Tam and the Marin Headlands had sharper outlines, and crisper more colorful features. Even the Golden Gate Bridge seemed to shine a brighter reddish orange(1).
To the Southeast, a clear view of the bay itself, including tiny tankers, cargo ships, and the white outline of the idling Grand Princess cruise ship parked in the bay, behind bright views of city neighborhoods(2). Only a couple of others were up at Tank Hill park that day, observing distancing requirements in addition to the views(3).
Stopped by Haight Street Market for more supplies, noticed that they had suspended all self-serve food options(4), including their delicious soups(5). The cafe’s tip jar choices reflected reactions to only a few days of sheltering at home(6).
The day before (Thursday) the Governor of California had essentially replicated Monday’s San Francisco shelter-in-place order for the entire state, the first state to do so, which the Chronicle reported in large type(7).
The New York Times exclaimed in all caps: DOCTORS SOUND ALARM AS A NATION STRUGGLES above a map of the United States, with numbers of cases and proportionate red circles(8). Later that day, Connecticut, Illinois, and New York states issued their own shelter-in-place orders.
It would take two more weeks for most other states to follow suit.

March 19th, SF distancing day three. First run since my 50-miler. I had rested my legs, only brief walks for a few days, then longer walks, up & down hills. When that felt completely fine, I decided to try an easy run. First up to Buena Vista Park where the poppies were in full bloom(1), then over to Corona Heights Park, where the clean air provided very clear views of downtown San Francisco, and across the bay to Oakland too(2)!
Finished my run with a coffee from Haight Street Market, where they had just changed store hours to close earlier for sanitizing, and limited the first hour of opening to those 60+ years old and Instacart workers(3).
Scanning the newspapers while waiting for my coffee, the day’s headlines captured some of the concerns & fears(4,5,6).
As a visual palate cleanser after those headlines, here’s my almond latte in a paper cup(7), since they stopped serving in reusable cups two days ago (tantek.com/t5661).

⛰🌁 March 17th, SF distancing day one. Cleaner skies made for an exceptionally clear view from the top of Buena Vista Park. Mount Tam, Marin Headlands, and the most red-orange I’ve seen the Golden Gate Bridge(1) from that spot. The purple flowers at the summit looked particularly brilliant(2).
Down on Haight street, several stores had closed per the sheltering orders, and posted signs accordingly(3,4,5,6).
Haight Street Market was still open, including the cafe. However, they had stopped serving coffee in personal cups(7).

🌌🌧 It was a dark and stormy morning. The start of a long day, too long for one race report post. I got up, put on my running outfit I’d set out the night before (https://tantek.com/t55_3), snacked on a dark chocolate mocha Clif bar, and ran up to the intersection where Cori was coming to pick us up. Stephanie joined minutes later. It was only sprinkling, yet the cold was already biting, despite us wearing all the layers we brought.
Cori picked us up, last two seats in her car, we huddled together for warmth and cracked jokes to lighten the mood and lift our spirits. We arrived at the Rodeo Beach parking lot just before 06:30, already brimming with activity(2 📷 Bryan). We weren’t the only #MarinUltraChallenge runners determined to run our races despite the cancellation. The rain picked up.
I’ve run in the rain before, many years @Nov_Project_SF & a few other cities, and a year ago on my double Tam run. Separately I’ve run in the dark, also at #NPSF, usually early gang, and on so many Tam sunrise runs. This was the first time I’d run in the dark, in the rain, on trails. Carpooling and starting together helped, knowing we’d all be out there facing the elements, finding our way.
After quick bathroom trips we found each other and @BryanTing under a green umbrella(3,4), assembled for a group photo(5 📷 Bryan), unbeknownst to us mere days before social distancing orders would forbid it. We composed ourselves in the now pouring rain, and started our run(6 📷 Bryan) crossing the Rodeo Beach gates(1 📷 Bryan), up the Coastal Trail.

🌸🏙☁️ A week ago today I ran my first 50-miler (https://tantek.com/t55b1), the hardest thing I’ve done. I knew I’d need 2 weeks of physical recovery. It’s also taken a week of mental recovery to start feeling like myself again.
The shelter-in-place and various cancellations have helped in some ways, provided challenges in others. I chose to sit still, breathe, do some yoga, eat deliberately, go for a walk every day, sleep as needed. Show up to commitments, keep in touch with close ones, love within my capacity to do so, toward others within their capacity to receive.
The past few days I’ve gone on easy runs too, culminating today in a run up to Twin Peaks. I stopped for a ground level view, appreciating immediate beauty(photo) before running up and over the peaks and returning back down the hill.
The physical healed the mental.
