Tam summit (#4) this morning. Chased @BryanTing once again to an uphill PR (sub-90min!), just made the 7:22 sunrise and sat on the rocks(1). Clear skies(2) from the start, faint streaks of orange before sunrise(3). Clear gradients 11 minutes before(4) sunrise, a leading orange glow 7 minutes before(5). Finally, sunrise from the door of the hut at the top(6), and a view from the rocks of the green hills below(7).
8.5 miles before 9 (2500+' climbed). Midweek #ECSCA #50ktraining session done.

Beautiful day at #SFRC this past Saturday. Practiced a few #ECSCA 50k trails: Fox, Coastal Fire, Marincello, Bobcat.
1. Up Fox taking in a westward view
2. Down Coastal Fire Road looking south, a low hanging cloud with a surreal reflection on the ocean
3. Muir Beach
4. Touching the surf
5. A furry caterpillar seen going back up Coastal Fire Road
6. Top of Fox trail before sprinting down to Tennessee Valley
7. Up Marincello looking East
8. Down Bobcat toward Alta (saw a baby snake!) with glimpses of downtown San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Sutro tower on the distant horizon.
~14.3 miles, 2900'+. Legs felt pretty good despite climbing 1000'+ at #NPSF Friday hills the day before. Finally broke 100+ miles in the past 30 days. Six weeks til my first 50k.

Made it #NPSF#doublegangagain last Wednesday. Sunrise is coming earlier and earlier, colors changing by the minute.
First photo was taken 4 minutes before sunrise, second photo 4 minutes after. Third photo just after starting #earlygang, city lights making the clouds & fog glow gray in the darkness.

#FBF to teaching #yoga @Nov_Project_SF Friday 2017-10-13 @TheNorthFace. đź“· @poleary87 (except 2nd).
I was honored when Paddy asked me if I could teach #NPSF yoga instead of our usual Friday hills, due to the poor outdoor air quality (unhealthy for everyone) from the north bay fires. Thanks to #TheNorthFace for allowing us early morning use of their space!
This was my first time teaching a full one hour yoga class on my own indoors (having taught outdoors over the summer), as well as first time teaching NPSF as a whole.
I came up with a custom routine (and a new playlist) that I thought would suit NPSFs abilities & challenges, provide a good workout, but perhaps most importantly help people connect with themselves, and hopefully find a sense of peace & calm amongst everything happening at the time.
Interestingly, though anxious at the start, I found myself also feeling more peaceful and calm as the class proceeded. Afterwards I was just grateful I was able to provide and serve a community which has inspired and helped me so much.
Learning to teach yoga and share that has been one of the highlights of 2017. My training @YogaFlowSF also left me with more questions than answers, personal and universal, that I know I will be spending more time thinking about in the coming years. Grateful for all my teachers, past and present.

This morning was harder.
It’s one thing to wake up in daylight,
another to get up in darkness.
One thing to run with a friend,
another to run alone.
To run in daylight,
another to run in darkness.
From darkness to dawn I made it to Diamond Head, and inside the crater as the sun crested the eastern rim. Less than twenty minutes later I made it to the summit. Clear skies overhead, the sun had ducked behind a cloud layer just above the horizon.
This is my second #NP_PhotoContest entry. From the profile you’d think I was part elf.
I’m standing in the same spot as two days ago, and yet, this morning began very differently.
Alone, unmotivated, barely motivated, running, then losing nearly half an hour looking for a restroom, almost quitting and turning back, pressing on to complete a couple of miles, up to the edge of the crater, and having gone that far, finally motivated to push all the way up inside to the top.
In that moment, beyond gratitude, I felt a growing sense of self-reliance, and some relief from self-doubt.
Thanks to running with #NovemberProject, I’ve learned to get up in darkness and wear a headlamp when running before dawn. Thanks to running trails with #NPSF friends (often at #SFRC), I’ve learned to wear a buff to wipe my brow, carry enough water for the roundtrip, and pack a snack just in case.
Running alone in the dark is still a challenge. There’s always an inside voice of doubt, speaking up at even a hint of exhaustion, tiredness, or breathing difficulty. I’ve learned to live above it by listening to it rather than rejecting it. By allowing myself the option to turn around, in a mile or two, it feels heard. And when that mile or two comes, the voice is almost always completely gone, replaced by feelings of momentum and self-confidence.
About halfway to the summit I saw a #grassrootsgear orange tanktop coming the other way and met Jessie & her friend from NovemberProjectDC! A pleasant surprise among the throngs of tourists. We stopped to take a photo together.
Standing there at the Diamond Head Summit, I waited for the sun to continue rising above the clouds, still low enough to cast a yellow orange glow. Took a few photos, then ran back down, pausing on the street outside Diamond Head to appreciate the chickens, roosters, and doves snacking near the sidewalk, before running back to the beach and finding breakfast.

Ninety minute #NPSF#earlygangthru regular workout before sunrise.
From cold moonlit darkness, with even darker eerie shadows, to a brightening clear orange horizon.
From barely moving to skipping up flights of stairs.
From barely motivated to just enough energy to make it through a long day.
Left before the last@Nov_Project_SFgroup photo to make it home in time to change and make it to@MozSFto host today’s@W3CABmeeting.

#NPSF PR Wednesday 37:14, ~3 min slower than last month. Colder (47F), felt harder this month despite music. Maybe three weeks of races caught up with me. Maybe 4500+ meters climbed this month. Maybe both.
Today’s PR Wednesday was not only my slowest this year, it was my slowest since March of two years ago (tantek.com/2015/084/t1).
Every segment was a struggle. I told myself to keep going, one segment at a time. On the last lap just before the Scott street climb, I heard the last part of one of Zip's bounces in my head:
Zipin: Will you ever quit?
NPSFs: No, we want some mo', we want some mo', we want some mo'.
And that powered my last hike up Scott street, to my fastest downhill segment of the day, and a more than 2x faster sprint up the steps than the earlier laps.
Just grateful to finish PR Wednesday today to close out my most strenuous month of racing ever.
Counting today, I’ve raced the past four weeks of this month:
* 11th tantek.com/2017/315/t1 Mt. Tam Trail Half Marathon
* 18th tantek.com/2017/328/t1 The North Face Endurance Challenge California Marathon Relay (2 legs)
* 23rd Mountain View Turkey Trot 5km (personal CR, post forthcoming)
* 29th @Nov_Project_SF PR Wednesday
And the first week of the month (on the 4th) I set a personal trail distance record of 15+ miles with 3100+ feet of altitude climbed while training with Lillian who did 20+ miles in prep for her 50k at #ECSCA.
All of that added up. According to my Strava I climbed over 4500 *meters* during my runs in November.
That’ll do.
Looking forward to a no-race December. We’ll see if I make it to next month’s PR Wednesday.

#NPSF double PR Wednesday:
5:30am 34:26s w/o music
6:30am 34:04s tied last month!
Felt good this morning, made it to the #earlygang PR Wednesday no problem. Unseasonably warm and dry. Warmest PR Wednesday I remember.
No music for the early gang PR Wednesday, and was much faster than last month's 5:30 PR Wednesday.
Skipped the in-betweeners abs workout, to drink a bunch of water, eat a clif blok, and easy run to the Fillmore Starbucks for a pitstop.
Decided to try listening to music during the 6:30 PR Wednesday but was only 22 seconds faster than the 5:30 run, yet exactly tying my 6:30 time last month. By the clock, the music didn’t seem to make much (if any) difference, even though it felt like it did.

This is me. Two weeks ago, after #NPSF#earlygang, before the 6:30 workout. I had a lot on my mind.
Sometimes I take things too seriously. It was two days before I was to co-teach my first public Vinyasa yoga class as part of my last weekend of YTT, graduating that Sunday after co-teaching a second class. Yoga sequences and philosophical challenges occupied my thoughts nearly every waking minute. Still do.
I am imperfect. Grateful for the humility reminder, and optimism that I can do better in the future.
I am old(er). Old enough to be grateful for every day. Old enough to feel holes in my heart every day from the losses of too many younger friends. Old enough to fill those holes with memories of our shared times, and intentions to live and pass on their joy, happiness, energy, care, and positivity towards others.
I am strong(er). Strong enough to know the barriers inside are often bigger than the barriers outside.
I am grateful. For too much to list. Enough to remind myself in moments of craving or emptiness.
I am hopeful, for the potential of every moment, for the positive changes we can make inside, and by our actions, outside, while being present in every moment, appreciating what is.
I have a lot on my mind. -

Running uphill is still the hardest for me to run, though with sustained effort and practice I am slowly getting better at it. I climbed over 2000' just two days ago, the combined total from double-PR Wednesday^1@Nov_Project_SFand evening run/hikes to finish out the Strava Mt. Everest Running Climbing Challenge for the month of May^2. Thanks to a restday yesterday and enough sleep last night, my legs felt fine (not sore) on the hills this morning.
I know that “proper” training for a marathon requires increasing distance, both in long runs, and total weekly miles. Since uphill is my weakpoint, I’m focusing my training on that, and especially on trails since they are more forgiving (thus more body sustainable) than running on the road. Rather than total miles, I’m focusing on time spent at high-effort running. That feels more right for my body, and if my PR Wednesday improvement over the past two months is any indication, the right thing for me to do too.
Now that I have Saturdays again, I will be running SFRC every Saturday morning that I’m in SF, doing my long runs on trails as well. I’ll eventually do at least one longish run (maybe 16-18 miles?) on road just to get used to doing so in the shoes I plan to wear for the race. Also planning to do at least a few track workouts to mix-in some speedwork.
For now I’m happy with the progress I’ve made, both in the past few months and the past few years running with@Nov_Project_SF., and for the increased body awareness from yoga teacher training^3 that has really helped me consciously keep track of how my body feels while running, and adjust breathing, posture, pace, stride, etc. accordingly.
As always, grateful to running/fitness/yoga friends, teachers, and communities (@Nov_Project@missioncliffs@YogaFlowSF) whose support has been essential to reinforcing regular sustainable physical practices.
