Ran my 13th Bay to Breakers race in 1:55:31 today! 4min+ faster than last year.
Once again the Midnight Runners crew cheered runners in Hayes Valley at the park a couple of blocks before the hill.
Felt better than I did last year, more able to sustain a moderate pace.
One quick pitstop in Golden Gate Park, and then picked up the pace to finish with a negative split and well under 2 hours. This time I made sure to keep running until I was well past the last timing strip.
Other than the Midnight Runners cheer gang, this year I did not see anyone I knew the whole race. Bus + BART + jog to the start. Howard street up to Hayes hill, then by the Panhandle and through Golden Gate park to the finish.
I did spot a neighbor after the finish and we caught up on the walk to the N-Judah light rail. Seeing the long line I decided to easy run backwards along the race course to see the costumes and a few human carried floats.
Caught the Midnight Runners crew on the Conservatory of Flowers steps and hiked back to the Panhandle together. After catching up with a few friends I went home to shower and eat before heading back to the Panhandle.
In contrast to last year, last Friday I only did a short shakeout run — no evening run and staying out late with Midnight Runners. Saturday SFRC was about the same distance.
Similar to last year I took a bus to Van Ness, then jogged to the Civic Center station and took BART to Embarcadero. It seems that’s the only reliable transit option, no matter what any mapping application (Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Routesy) claims about bus or lightrail times or routes (they were all wrong, yet again, just like last year).
Despite not seeing any friends running the race, feeling both stronger and more confident in my training was enough to boost my mood for the duration. I was grateful to be out there running on a beautiful day.

Ran my 12th #BayToBreakers race in 1:59:54 on Sunday 2024-05-19.
After a comedy of transit struggles to get to the start line, I jumped in with Corral C runners (my bib was for Corral B) and started with them.
Great seeing the Midnight Runners crab rave cheer gang in Hayes Valley before Hayes Hill.
Made it into Golden Gate Park, and eventually saw Vivek and David Lam making their way back from the finish.
Just before the bison paddock, I saw Paddy & Eleanor walking back as well, and stopped to briefly chat with them.
Soon after I saw Adrienne and a few other #NPSF pals running and as they stopped to say hi to Paddy, I took off to go finish.
Adrienne and friends caught up to me on the last segment before Ocean Beach, and decided to run together. After turning the corner onto Great Highway, I could see the finish line. Glancing down at my watch there seemed to be enough time to finish under 2 hours if we picked it up. I asked Adrienne if we could try for a sub-2 hour time and she said to go for it. We picked up the pace and after crossing the finish line I stopped my Garmin — it read 1:59:54.
Oddly the official Bay to Breakers results (which are not at a linkable URL) showed 2:00:07. The only explanation I have is after the first timing strip after the finish line where I stopped my watch, there was a big crowd of loitering people that made it hard to keep moving, and cross a second timing strip. It is possible the first timing strip did not register my bib chip, and only the second timing strip picked it up. I have emailed Bay to Breakers to see if they can correct it, and included a link to my Strava activity that shows I recorded the entire race on my watch.
It was a harder race than usual, despite the good weather.
There were a few things that contributed. First, I had run each of the prior two days: 5km+ at Friday night’s Midnight Runners 5th anniversary run and run/walk celebration afterwards totaling ~5 miles, and then 6.5 miles at SFRC on the trails on Saturday.
I slept reasonably well the night before the race, and having checked the news announcements about the availability of transit options in the morning, planned accordingly. When I checked the actual train arrival times, none of the MUNI trains that were supposed to be running were running. I ran down to take the MUNI bus which was supposed to go downtown, except it stopped at Van Ness avenue, inexplicably, and the driver told everyone it was the last stop.
Admittedly I was already annoyed that SF MUNI for some reason decided to stop the MUNI trains the morning of Bay to Breakers that could easily have taken thousands of runners to near the race start at Embarcadero via the Market Street subway. Having the bus stop sooner than expected was a second disappointment and discouragement.
I (and many other runners) decided to run towards the start, which was still ~2 miles away at that point.
Upon reaching the Civic Center station on Market street, we realized from the street level displays that BART trains appeared to be running normally like any other Sunday, so we went downstairs and paid for a second transit ticket to take the BART a few stops.
The BART train was full of costumed Bay to Breakers runners. Disembarking at the Embarcadero station, I jogged/ran the rest of the way around the entrance corral maze to the right spot for Corral B entrants, and joined the group waiting at the start line.
Lessons learned: I am not trusting MUNI rail or bus into downtown on Bay to Breakers race day again, despite any announcements from SFMTA. Too many years of bad experiences.
However, BART seems reliable so I plan to find my way to taking BART in the future. Perhaps by taking a bus to the 16th street BART station, avoiding all street closures.
Having missed my start corral due to the transit mishaps, I didn’t see anyone else I knew. The combination of being annoyed at MUNI’s unreliability (both in what was announced vs what was running and premature bus termination) and starting in a crowd not knowing anyone took my motivation down several notches.
Still, the weather was pleasant yet cool, ideal for a race so I ran a pace that felt good for me, and kept an eye out for friends along the course. I stopped after mile 1 for a portapotty pitstop. Back in the chaos of Howard street and then Ninth to Hayes, I saw a few folks I knew from a distance.
Seeing and high-fiving the Midnight Runners crab race cheer crew at Hayes Hill turned my mood around though, and I enjoyed the rest of the race, from Hayes Hill through Golden Gate Park.
It was my slowest Bay to Breakers yet, however first in a while that I finished with friends!
After we grabbed our medals and snacks in the finish area, I hiked/jogged back to the Panhandle, found the Midnight Runners crab rave crew keeping the party going and joined in.

Ran my 11th #BayToBreakers in 1:47:11 on Sunday 2023-05-21, again the day after an @sfrunco.com (@SFRunCo) Saturday trail #run, but this time in the middle of a very long training run, my last before the rescheduled #MUC50k trail race. Ran over 4 miles to the start, hopped in the next race corral, ran Bay to Breakers with the colorfully costumed crowd, picked up my medal, ate a banana, ran back through Golden Gate Park, and then a bit more up city hills to round out 18 miles and 1000'.

🌁⛰🏙📰 March 21st, SF distancing day five. Ran up to Twin Peaks, North Peak, and South Peak for a clear view of Sutro tower, Mount Tam, the Golden Gate Bridge, downtown San Francisco, East Bay hills, and tiny container ships & the Grand Princess still idling on the bay(1).
There’s a third mini peak south of the two official Twin Peaks, with a beautiful field of poppies(2). At the time I’d stopped to admire the poppies on the inside of the hairpin turn up to Twin Peaks(tantek.com/t55h1). Afterwards a post-run stop at Haight Street Market for a coffee.
The day’s weekend Wall Street Journal had a photo of a nearly empty Times Square, a scene previously only imagined in disaster movies (and Vanilla Sky). The headline article described how 1 in 5 Americans were now under orders to limit their outside activity(3).

I did it. 50 miles of #running #MUC50 trails with 11000+ feet of climbing. Started in a dark & stormy morning with @Nov_Project_SF 50k runners, finished with pal @BryanTing in a dark & stormy night after he crewed me the whole day.
Much harder & longer than expected. Thanks also to #NPSF friends that showed up and ran with me for a few segments.

#Racekit prepared for #MUC50 race. Yesterday CA governor Newsom banned 250+ people gatherings which forced cancellation of the Marin Ultra Challenge. With training and support of friends, I’m running the 50 mile course anyway. The cancellation email even said:
“we encourage you to get outside and run the course as a virtual race”
My friends running the 50k course and I will start together and eventually I’ll fork off for the 50 mile course. Approximate schedule if you’d like to come run together for a bit!
06:30 Rodeo Beach start
11:30 Cardiac Hill ~20 miles
12:45 Stinson Beach ~23 miles
14:30 Cardiac Hill ~30 miles
18:00 Muir Beach / Pelican Inn ~41 miles
19:15 Tennessee Valley Parking Lot ~46 miles
20:30 Rodeo Beach finish ~50 miles

⛰🏃🏻♂️ Mt. Tam PR on the annual Jorts run! (1. 📷@1jorgemaravillaselfie) Final 2019 #run, finishing the year at 901 #runningmiles. #HappyNewYearfriends.
2. #Temelpatrail start in the bright afternoon sun.
3. #MtTamcasting a shadow below
4. Mt. Tam East Summit
5. San Francisco viewed from the summit
Despite my watch battery dying part way on the downhill, it still captured my ascent of Mt Tam, and enough of the descent for almost 6 miles of the 8.5 miles total roundtrip. That was just enough to push me over 900 miles for the year.
I haven’t run up Mt Tam in months, so the 84 minutes PR (personal record) felt good. My heart felt strong (not broken). I kept thinking of everyone I was grateful for this year, those I’ve known for years, and new friends I met in 2019. Love you all.

🌄🏃🏻♂️ 3 months from today (2020-03-14) I am #runningthe #MUC50, my first 50 mile #trailrun, the hardest thing I’ve ever attempted. Today I returned to #SFRC, first time since back-to-back #ECSCAraces a month ago. Ran to the #beach(3,4,5) & back, with a little detour to Haypress camp(6), with pal@VivekGowriand it felt great.
Beautiful weather, birds flocked overhead and gathered all on one wire among several(2), and the ground was squishy from the recent rains, leaving a few reflective pools on the #trails(1). Today felt good & necessary for many reasons, physical, mental, emotional. Grateful for running with friends and the ideal running conditions.
With today’s long-ish #run, I’m starting to focus on my #50miletrainingfor the Marin Ultra Challenge (http://insidetrail.com/calendar/marin-ultra-challenge/). Well outside my comfort zone, after I finished a 50k + half marathon (~46 miles in 2 days) without injury, and only sore feet to show for it, I feel 50 miles is within reach with dedicated training. The biggest challenge will be finishing it in under 14 hours.
#Runnerfriends, this is your heads-up. Starting at about mile 30, I’m allowed pacers for the MUC 50. If you’d like to help me finish 50 miles by running with me for the last 20 miles please let me know. It’ll likely be a slow 20 miles, and some of it in the dark with headlamps. Think of it as an early evening fast-hike, with an opportunity to catch-up and talk about all the things you do when pushing your limits.

15km & ~2k' in #Marin 8/31 to finish #August at 216km & 7116m. Grateful for a month of consistent training at home.
Traveling a lot soon — HMU to #run in Portland @XOXO, Fukuoka @W3C #TPAC2019, Amsterdam @IndieWebCamp #ViewSource, NYC & Brighton IndieWebCamps, London #MozFest, St. Louis @WordCampUS #WCUS!
August was also a monthly distance running PR and my second highest vertical climbing month after last October’s 207km & 8932m (also only my second time running 200km+ or climbing 5km+ in any month).
Got a late start that morning and drove myself directly to the Tennessee Valley parking lot. Having forgotten to check the #SFRC route direction, I ran the opposite way again, up Fox with less fog(2) than last week, down Coastal to an ominously overcast Muir Beach(3). Touched the water(4) and noticed blue skies in the distance to the Northwest(5). I cut the route short via the beautiful Middle Green Gulch trail up to Coyote Ridge. From the Coyotoe Ridge peak(6) I could see the North side of Muir beach, and a thin blue line of clear Pacific Ocean over the clouds(1). Looking south the city was still covered by fog, just a few buildings and Sutro tower poking through(7). Ran back down Miwok(8) to the Tennessee Valley parking lot and up/down a bit of Marincello to reach 15km.
I’ll be making good use of the few September and October mornings I’m home and joining up with runners (especially on trails) on my travels when missing Marin #trails(9).

San Francisco was shrouded in #fog, the tip of Sutro Tower barely poking through(5). The #sun was already high above the clouds at 07:29(6). On the way down we also saw an egret(7)! No PR but did set my second best time up the mountain. That and no falls this time. I’ll take it.

#trailtuesdaythrowback to #running up (and down) Mt. Tam almost two weeks ago with pal Hannah (1). The #trails are not (2) as green as they were two months ago (tantek.com/t4zc1). After an 88:31 climb (tied my 2nd fastest time) to Mt. Tam’s East peak summit, I could barely see the tiny San Franisco skyline poking through a thick fog blanket (3). Looking East the sun was rising far above the horizon, already well on its way at 7:30am (4).
Chasing Hannah back down the hill was faster than a month ago, setting a PR on the first 1.6 miles of steep technical descent. With a gentler downhill, Hannah ran ahead and disappeared. I settled into a good rhythm and pace of my own, having become more familiar with these trails.
While enjoying the Tenderfoot trail forest, I noticed the ground felt squishier from the recent rains. The trail narrowed with a hill on one side and ravine on the other. Suddenly the earth gave way under my right foot, I felt lower body start to spin and fall downward in slow motion, impact the side of the ravine, and start sliding.
I remember thinking, how far am I going to slide, followed shortly by, I have to stop! I spun to press against the hill, threw my arms up, dug my hands & fingers into the soft earth, slowing and stopping the slide. Took a few seconds to realize what happened, spit out some mud, and balance myself against the side of the hill to look up.
I’d slid ~20-30 feet down into the ravine. Nothing felt broken. I looked down and couldn't really see how far down I’d have to go. Looking back up I leaned my body into the side of the hill and slowly crawled up, keeping in contact. Made it back to the trail. Collected myself, scraped most of the mud off myself and my handheld water bottle, clearing off the mud at the top so I could still drink what was left. Another self-inspection, lots of scrapes from left forearm, to thigh, and knee which was bleeding but didn’t hurt. Shock, I’m sure.
Ran the rest of the trail, and onto Cascade road. I could start to feel the dirt stinging in my skin. Made it back to Equator coffee in downtown Mill Valley where Hannah was waiting. She checked to make sure I was ok, then took a photo at my request (5). Not pictured: my forearms muddy from elbow to wrist.
After wiping off a bit more, I drove us back to the city, went home, and scrubbed off all the mud & dirt in the shower. Scrapes & bruises, nothing broken, nothing twisted or strained.
Despite the fall, I set my second fastest time for the Mt. Tam Loop.

9 days ago, 13+ miles & 2500' at the final May #SFRC #trailrun. May had many ups & downs, emotionally & literally like this #run. Started at Tennessee Valley, ran up Miwok to beautiful green valley views (1) and distant bridges (2). Turned left onto Dias Ridge, ran freely downhill til I tripped & fell.
Somehow reacted quickly enough to roll towards the grassy edge, scraping only my right hand on gravel. Immediately got back up and kept running. Reached #Muirbeach (3), touched the #surf (4). Ran back up Coastal, down Fox, to the parking lot, just short of 13. Ran up #Marincello to finish my #trail #halfmarathon (5).
Tough but solid just two days after a Tam run, during which I also fell (down a ravine!) but that's another story.

Miles of clouds above the city. Planned to run 14 miles in the rain. Ran 15.7 (25km) in high winds instead.
My first #SFRC #trail #run this year. #trailrun #50ktraining
The clouds parted as we started[2]. Low 50s(F) with wind gusts. Streams flowing down trails[3]. Squishier, muddier. Earthworms everywhere and a few banana slugs too[4].
Sparkly sunlit paths[5], greenery lusher than usual[6], city skyline behind emerald hills[7], pinching a #VOR[8]. Minor cloudburst at Tennessee Valley trailhead. Returned home and soon the rain returned.

Starting up a steep hill in the dark was a different kind of challenge. Nothing like pushing physical limits outdoors while watching constellations fade from the sky as it turns from black to navy, to ever lighter shades of blue.
