    @pan Maybe you could have a private IM account with your private current status. People you care about and likewise who care about you will see that.
    (I use !xmpp for private communication as it is designed for that, which is also federated and you can choose an admin you trust).

      @pan Well, you're reasonably private if you use Tor and only want to protect your original identity. So you have a perfect privacy setup for leaking sensitive information in a broadcast fashion to subscribers since (afaik) all !ostatus federating instances allow Tor connections.
      But no, neither !GNUsocial nor #Mastodon have any real privacy for hiding content.

      There's always that question about which tool to use for what purpose: What's your threat model?

      @pan My issue with mixing public and private communication inside the same tool is that some day you're going to make a mistake (or as with Facebook, the definition of private gets redefined regularly). Better to use different tools for sensitive communication, those are my two fiddy.
