@suborbitalpigeon true, but the economic 'hold' will largely remain despite independence and we'll …
-
@mcnalu Unlike others, Scotland has #ProportionalRepresentation like most civilized countries…how much say do you have in Westminster?
-
Currently a Scot has better representation than most: MP, MSP & MEP. Post-independence we'd have no MP, so no say in Westminster and...
-
@laurelrusswurm ... most MSPs are elected first past the post, not by PR.
-
@mcnalu Is that b/c electoral districts would be too large geographically ? They say that here too but I don’t think it’s a valid excuse…
-
@laurelrusswurm not sure, but see @suborbitalpigeon 's dents. My list MSP represents such a big region, I don't feel represented by him/her
-
@mcnalu … at a time when technology made the world smaller— look at us chatting across an ocean whilst #NSA looks over our shoulders !
-
@mcnalu More representation is good, but I am not sure how it works there; I am thinking of it as though Canada had been annexed by USA…
-
@mcnalu …& let us self govern retaining power to overrule !Canada‘s gov’ts are obsequious to USA but wouldn’t have to be with good gov’t
-
@mcnalu My question is why you feel unrepresented. Is it ideological or because the MSP makes disadvantageous decisions for your area?
-
@laurelrusswurm I'm dismayed by the tories in Westminster (23% of vote got them in coalition) and at SNP in Scotland (22% PR->majority gov)
-
@mcnalu I’m not sure I understand… are you saying 22% Proportional Representation gave them a majority government?
-
@laurelrusswurm also my local labour politicians are more interested in community and less in party mission than SNP ones
-
@mcnalu I understood that Proportional representation does not give 100% of the power to any one party like our First Past The Post does
-
@laurelrusswurm to clarify, 22% of those who could have voted, voted SNP in 2011 and SNP won the majority of seats.
-
@mcnalu All the PR systems (I know of) suggested for Canada feature multi-member ridings which naturally provide wider representation.
-
@laurelrusswurm I wrote a blog post about Scottish independence which explains my thinking: blog.mcnalu.net
-
@mcnalu So voter turnout was very low? If your PR has single member districts, you have one of the same problems we do with FPTP
-
@mcnalu When only 1 person can win in each district, each party runs the Candidate they think will win, so they all run the same kind.
-
@mcnalu For decades one district had a shoo-in Conservative MPP; when she resigned, almost all the parties ran women much like her…
-
@mcnalu ...and the NDP (the most left leaning party) won. With multi-member ridings the candidates put forward are more diverse.
-
@mcnalu Thanks, that should help…. I’ll read that and think about it, then ask you more questions later :D

@laurelrusswurm no problem, happy to discuss and get your perspective. I'm finding it hard to have …
