Bing use-case! AKA One Weird Trick Time And Date Sites Hate
In my prior post¹ I noted that I use 'b' as a Search Shortcut for #Bing. Here is why:
* quickly view a Gregorian calendar month display, with readable days, days of the week, and weekends & holidays highlighted.
E.g. I type this into my Firefox address bar:
b dec 2024
then press return and immediately see:
Only Microsoft Bing search supports this.
On other search engines (Duckduckgo, Google, Yahoo) all you get are links to random date time sites littered with ads, or blurry images of calendar months where the day numbers and holidays are too small to read.
This is something I have informally complained about to friends for years, that if you use Google Search for unit conversions, simple arithmetic, and even names of holidays, you get a nice large font “featured snippet” display of exactly your answer. But not something as simple as a month and year or even month with the implication that you want to see the current or next instance of that month.
How hard can that be to build? 12 names of months. 12 more 3-letter abbreviations. Multiplied by however number of languages supported. An intern could code that in under an hour. Someone has likely already written a regular expression for detecting this. (Aside: I tried year first, e.g. 2024 Dec, and hilariously enough that did not work to show the nice month display. So I suspect there is a minimal regular expression under the covers of this Bing feature.)
From having tried search engines for years, I was pretty convinced no one supported this.
Then on a whim I tried this in Bing recently (maybe I hadn’t before?) and to my pleasant surprise it worked.
There you have it, a use-case for Bing that only works in Bing, and reason enough to add a 'b' Search Shortcut in Firefox for Bing.

🗓 More than half way through #January 2021. Since last month’s calendar post: Electoral college results finalized in the middle of the night[1] despite a violent insurrection[2]. Millions received their first vaccine doses, though new cases grew by many millions more[3].
And yet, Georgia’s Senate seats flipped, and with them the US Senate. 3 days til our next president snaps his fingers with executive orders, undoing damage or putting a stop to bad ideas, like the Keystone XL pipeline[4].
Finally, as of this morning, 2021-01-17, we’ve entered the future of Johnny Mnemonic (1995)[5], as noted by a wake-up call in its opening scene[6]. Time to pop in that USB stick and view it in today’s contexts.

🗓 Winter solstice, #December 2020. Took a break from posting photos since June. Sat with a lot. Listened. Focused inward, on essentials, on sheltering, and being sustainably supportive of others.
This month feels different. The U.S. Electoral college voted, shifting a critical mass of support for moving forward with election results. The Pfizer vaccine shipped and first doses have been administered.
Daily cases & tragedies continue, nearly ignored by the U.S. government, cruel obstructions of aid for months, only recently offering up mere crumbs for those in need.
As individuals there’s only so much we can do by ourselves. What we can do we should, putting on our own masks, filling our own cups so we’re not pouring from emptiness. 2020 has laid bare layers of challenges, individual entitlement & irresponsibility, masses succumbing to misinformation, systemic biases against those least privileged, racist idolatory of a narcissistic president.
And yet there’s bits of hope. 15 days until the chance of flipping Georgia’s Senate seats. 30 days until our next president can snap his fingers with day 1 executive orders to undo so much damage.
Balance work & joy while staying safe friends. Take care of yourselves, your loved ones, and let’s make it to 2021.

A year and decade are arbitrary boundaries, yet this change feels different than others. Different from even a month ago. December went somewhat as expected, yet unexpectedly challenging in a couple of ways.
After one last big push of work, I was going to rest, reflect, and recover from the year. Instead, the stresses of unexpected home repairs emptied emotional reserves already drained from months of pushing hard, harming my judgment, undermining empathy, leading me to make more mistakes, and likely causing (or perhaps accelerating an inevitable) break. Recovery and regaining my footing became my focus.
This month, year, and decade is still just beginning, and even if arbitrary, perhaps that beginning is an opportunity to refocus, keep giving myself and others time & space to heal, while rebuilding & strengthening in other ways.
The shedding I mentioned last month, still in-progress. The #transformation, accelerating in other ways. #Growth from being outside my comfort zone has shifted into growth from recovery. Still embracing #loving (to others’s capacity to receive) & #friendships into this year.
