Updates tagged with npsf on stadeus!: Finished #RodeoValley 30k #trailRace in 5:10:43 on Saturday. In the photo I’m massaging a midsection cramp while power hiking uphill, and grinning because I knew I was almost at the top of the last big climb of the course.First race post lockdown was exciting, fun, steady, strong, until a downhill trip (no fall) broke my momentum, strained the right leg/glute, and killed the appetite. Struggled and pushed thru remaining climbs to finish strong on the final downhill without injury, 26s longer than 2018.Great starting with 50k runners Bryan & Eliza, and having pal Erika run me in the last 4 miles (also took this 📷) and share salty snacks, a needed boost.Taking notes as memories resurface. Processing everything & how each section went, insights gained, and lessons learned.#runner #running #instaRunner #trailRunner #ultraRunner #trailRace #grassRootsGear #NovemberProject #NPSF #Marin #MarinHeadlands #CoastalTrail #Hill88 #uphill #powerhike #50kTraining #50mileTraining #2021_219 #laterGram #noFilterThe night before: https://tantek.com/t5E512018 Rodeo Valley: https://tantek.com/2018/175/t1/finished-rodeovalley-my-first-30k

In memory of #NPSF hills I ran to Twin Peaks today[1], 25min (or a bit less) of all uphill just to start — something that was beyond my reach back then. Starting at Oak Street I caught a sign in a window[2] I hadn’t seen before, encouraging folks to:* see black women* hear black women* trust black women* love black women* protect black women* pay black womenAfter running up Ashbury to Clayton to Twin Peaks Boulevard and climbing to the summit & both peaks, I turned around to see a clear view of Sutro Tower, Mt Tam, and the Golden Gate Bridge from the South Peak[3]. On the return run, I spotted a pair of apparent princesses in pink dresses strolling along, brightly lit by the brilliant setting sun[4], along the adjacent road blocked to motor traffic. As I climbed the North Peak, I saw them again up ahead, strolling in the middle of the road without a care in the world[5].Reaching the top of the North Peak, I noticed Market Street’s streetlamps had been lit, the sunset barely lighting up a few blocks of downtown[6]. Made it back to the Twin Peaks Summit as the sun dropped toward the Pacific Ocean, bathing everything nearby in orange light[7].Ran down the hill at an easy pace, legs & feet tired after yesterday’s longer run. Grateful for regular runs up Twin Peaks, where 25 minutes is the start, rather than the whole workout.#trail #runner #runners #trailRunner #trailRun #ultraRunner #SF #SanFrancisco #hilliversary #NovemberProjectSF #NovemberProject #TwinPeaks #50ktraining #50mileTraining #optOutside #fromWhereIRun #noFilterPreviously, previously, previously: * https://tantek.com/2020/017/t2/six-years-ago-npsf-hills* https://tantek.com/2016/017/t1/two-years-ago-first-npsf-hillsforbreakfast* https://tantek.com/2014/017/t1/first-novemberprojectsf-hillsforbreakfast

The start of a long day, too long for one race report post. I got up, put on my running outfit I’d set out the night before (https://tantek.com/t55_3), snacked on a dark chocolate mocha Clif bar, and ran up to the intersection where Cori was coming to pick us up. Stephanie joined minutes later. It was only sprinkling, yet the cold was already biting, despite us wearing all the layers we brought.Cori picked us up, last two seats in her car, we huddled together for warmth and cracked jokes to lighten the mood and lift our spirits. We arrived at the Rodeo Beach parking lot just before 06:30, already brimming with activity(2 📷 Bryan). We weren’t the only #MarinUltraChallenge runners determined to run our races despite the cancellation. The rain picked up.I’ve run in the rain before, many years @Nov_Project_SF & a few other cities, and a year ago on my double Tam run. Separately I’ve run in the dark, also at #NPSF, usually early gang, and on so many Tam sunrise runs. This was the first time I’d run in the dark, in the rain, on trails. Carpooling and starting together helped, knowing we’d all be out there facing the elements, finding our way. After quick bathroom trips we found each other and @BryanTing under a green umbrella(3,4), assembled for a group photo(5 📷 Bryan), unbeknownst to us mere days before social distancing orders would forbid it. We composed ourselves in the now pouring rain, and started our run(6 📷 Bryan) crossing the Rodeo Beach gates(1 📷 Bryan), up the Coastal Trail.#run #runner #runners #RodeoBeach #darkness #morning #rain #weatherProof #nightrun #WorkHardDreamBigDoCoolShit #50miles #50miler #ultra #ultraRunner #ultraRunners #ultraRunning #ultraMarathon #InsideTrail #MUC #MUC50 #optOutside #NeverStopExploring #NovemberProjectSF #NovemberProject #NP_Continues #NP_WeekendWarriors #MarinFitnessProject #2020_074 #20200314 #laterGram #noFilter

My first the day after a 50k.Clear sky, sunrise start(2). My dad and I jumped into start wave 8. We started in the middle of the pack, passed through the arch, and the struggle began. After a brief jog out of the field and part way up the Marin City suburb street, my legs dropped to a walk before even reaching the first trail.I power-hiked off to the right as best as I could, letting all the eager runners pass. My dad started to pull ahead. I encouraged him, just reminded him to look behind him every 30 seconds or so and keep me in sight.Pacing dad become chasing dad.We reached the Alta Bobcat intersection and saw a friendly group cheering us. Among them one of them recognized me from yesterday, and asked didn’t she see me yesterday, I said yeah I did the 50k, and am pacing my dad today, motioning in front of me with a grin. This seemed to catch her attention, and she ran up to catch us.She ran up ahead to my dad and asked if she could interview him. He had just taken a photo of me(3). After her interview she ran back to me and introduced herself, Brianna (who I’d later find out was @brisacksy from LA, mutual friends with @jussnessinaround! Small world indeed). The race leaders, having finished their down-and-up loop, passed us on the way to the first aid station. We reached the shady forest at the top of Alta trail and I almost caught my dad again. At the Alta station we topped off our waters, and headed down the moderately steep Rodeo trail. Memories came flashing back from ECSCA 2014 where this very trail was the long downhill of the marathon relay, my first 10k trail race.Passed a few runners on the way down. Started to close the gap with my dad a few times, yet he kept pulling away. Finally caught up at the second aid station at the bottom of the downhill, and we started power hiking our way up the Bobcat trail.I hadn’t felt hungry until then, and since this was the last big uphill I tore open a Simple Energy packet and ate it.Finished our Rodeo Bobcat trails loop, once again hiking up to the top of Alta trail and down through its shady forest. My dad once again turned to take a photo of me(4). Topped off my water at the Alta aid station where one of the station volunteers warned us that we were behind pace for the cut-off. Even though technically we were about 5 minutes behind that cut-off checkpoint, I was a little annoyed at being told (hoping my dad didn’t hear it and get discouraged), as having just ran the mostly downhill subsequent six miles the day before, I knew we would easily make it to the finish before the four hour cut-off.Onto SCA trail we went. Single-track and a bit rocky, it’s the most technical part of the ECSCA half marathon course. Being more familiar I took the lead and my dad followed, til he caught up to me on the brief uphill where you get a great view of San Francisco, the bridge, the bay, and the 101 Freeway. Back to the rocky descent I started to close in on him again.A race volunteer directed him down the left turn towards the bridge. I’d almost caught up and he took off down those stairs, opening up a bit of a lead again. This was it, my last chance to actually catch him before the Golden Gate Bridge. I focused as I had the day before and started leaping downward as quickly and deftly I could, passing others in pursuit of my dad who had somehow also picked up speed. Caught him on the last switch back, and we crossed the road together onto the brief bit of trail before the bridge.Apparently there were enough of us running the half marathon that The North Face was able to reserve the West side sidewalk on the bridge just for racers. It was pleasantly warmer than the day before, with a nicer Pacific Ocean view. Once again the concrete path was no fun to run on, so dropped down to a power-walk, swinging my arms forcefully for extra forward momentum. My dad pulled away again, and took another photo(5).Only near the end of the bridge did I start running with another racer who wasn’t sure where she was going. We realized we needed to cloverleaf under the bridge back towards the finish. Race volunteers where there to direct us yet again. I had my whistle ready, the warm sun had really brought out the toursts. No need to use the whistle, we were able to get past the tourists with some kind requests or yelling out “on your left!”. I saw my dad enter the sweeping downhill path toward The Warming Hut. Last chance to catch him, so I pushed extra hard. He paused briefly and whistled for me, seeing me approaching he kept going. By the time he reached the steps I was mere feet behind him. As he hestitated for the tourists, I launched down them as I had the day before.Last chance to build up a lead before he’d catch me again on the flats. At the bottom of the steps, race volunteers were once again stopping traffic so we could crass. Dad caught up to me on the gravel path to the field, and we stuck together for the remainder. Tight right turn from the gravel onto the Crissy field green to the finishing chute. Told my dad to step carefully and look out for the gopher holes. With mere yards to go we grabbed hands and raised them up as we crossed the finish line(6) under bright blue skies. We finished in 3:22:19 with almost 13 miles, and just over 2000' climbed. Easily beat the four hour time limit. Walk in the park. Like a typical Saturday morning SFRC run. Sore feet but otherwise I felt fine. Nothing else hurt. My #50miletraining has begun.Epilogue: Afterwards we walked around, loosening up our legs. My dad grabbed a seat and elevated his legs. I walked a bit more to round up my total distance to an actual 13.1 miles half marathon (We’d only ran ~12.8 miles at the finish line), and also just to savor a moment reflecting on back-to-back race days(7).We picked up our drop bag with clean clothes and extra layers, though we’d already dried off in the warm sunshine. I decided to check The North Face merchandise tent, felt I’d achieved enough of a feat to pick up something to commemorate. They had a nice “coordinates shirt” with the latitude longitude of the race finish, however were out of medium and large sizes.I found a plain medium blue sports shirt and asked them to add the coordinates, as well as 50k & 13.1 Finisher heat decals on it. While they were preparing it I pulled out my second red ECSCA t-shirt from packet pick-up and asked for the same double finisher decals. Took a shot the next morning with my #ECSCA2019 #medals for #medalmonday(8).Still feels surreal that I finished both races, and felt fine. I can only imagine how unfamiliar it might feel in the future, when the memories fade. I know I have a long hard training cycle ahead for my first 50 miler, with its own ups and downs. When I'm feeling down or having doubts, I’ll be putting on one of these shirts to remind myself of what’s possible.#runner #WorkHardDreamBigDoCoolShit #InstaRunner #TrailRunner #UltraRunner #GrassRootsGear #NovemberProject #NPSF #LetsDoThis #2019_321 #20191117 #latergram #nofilter

My dad grabbed a seat and elevated his legs. I walked a bit more to round up my total distance to an actual 13.1 miles half marathon (We’d only ran ~12.8 miles at the finish line), and also just to savor a moment reflecting on back-to-back race days(7).

We picked up our drop bag with clean clothes and extra layers, though we’d already dried off in the warm sunshine. I decided to check The North Face merchandise tent, felt I’d achieved enough of a feat to pick up something to commemorate. They had a nice “coordinates shirt” with the latitude longitude of the race finish, however were out of medium and large sizes.

I found a plain medium blue sports shirt and asked them to add the coordinates, as well as 50k & 13.1 Finisher heat decals on it. While they were preparing it I pulled out my second red ECSCA t-shirt from packet pick-up and asked for the same double finisher decals. Took a shot the next morning with my #ECSCA2019 #medals for #medalmonday(8).

Still feels surreal that I finished both races, and felt fine. I can only imagine how unfamiliar it might feel in the future, when the memories fade.

I know I have a long hard training cycle ahead for my first 50 miler, with its own ups and downs. When I'm feeling down or having doubts, I’ll be putting on one of these shirts to remind myself of what’s possible.

#runner #WorkHardDreamBigDoCoolShit #InstaRunner #TrailRunner #UltraRunner #GrassRootsGear #NovemberProject #NPSF #LetsDoThis #2019_321 #20191117 #latergram #nofilter2019-11-22T17:45:00-05:00Tantek: 🏅🏃🏻♂️I did it. 9:34:44@thenorthfaceECS#TNFECS#ECSCA“50k”(53k😂). 50k distance PR in 8:59:41 according to Strava. My first #ultramarathonrace.Yes I trained for this, and so many things had to go right to make this possible. Clean air. Ideal #runningweather. Running up the first couple of hills with pal Vivek to new segment PRs.Magically misty trails until climbing above the fog to clear skies above and a surreal cloudbank below. Pleasantly surprised to see Jenny Maier at the Cardiac Hill aid station pouring water for us racers. My only stop to take a selfie(2).Feeling nimble down the Ben Johnson trail, picking up speed until I was leading a pair of much faster 50 miler runners to the depths of Muir Woods, whereupon they quickly passed me on the uphill. Worked through a right calf about to spasm and lock-up on the Lost Trail climb out of the woods.Slower Dipsea descent than I wanted, but controlled. Stuffed salty Pringles chips in my mouth which tasted much better than they should have.Tough grind back up to Deer Park and then fun times again chasing another faster runner downhill to the highway. Steady work on Redwook Creek back to Muir Beach aid station and then the Coastal Fire Road grind. Finally the Fox trail descent on legs feeling tired too soon. I kept my toes pointed straight forward downward like Grady had told me to just 8 days before at NPSF, and took shorter shallower steps to maintain form. Picked up speed until I dropped into Tennessee Valley.Delightfully surprised to see Krissi who ran with me and talked me up to the Tennessee Valley aid station, coaching me on a plan to beat the sweepers. After making sure I got the water & fuel I needed without pause and kept moving, she ushered me up Marincello making it clear I had to pick it up to make it.Where I’d sped down earlier that morning passing racers, this time it was a strugglefest where I got passed. The last big long grind. I repeated the yoga yamas & niyamas to myself as a distraction from the exhaustion, spending just a moment trying to relate each one to my present and recent past. Literally a moving meditation.Made it to the Alta aid station, the last one, and knew this was it, the make or break moment. Time to speed down the steady single-track SCA downhill. Stopped briefly to take my only other photo during the race(3). Focused on the rocky trail and started passing racers again. Turned left down towards the bridge, it looked so close. My legs kept trying to tell me they were too tired to go quickly. No joke I started to hum The Rocky theme out loud to myself to drown out what the legs were saying and it worked. Picked up enough speed to both pass even more runners, and somehow set a couple of segment PRs!Left the trails and started across the Golden Gate Bridge which was once again enveloped in fog. Except it was cold, wet, and windy enough to wipe out all the warmth I’d built up. Dropped into a slow robotic jog across the concrete bridge, no time to think or worry or feel the cold, or look at the time. Only had to use my whistle twice to part clumps of phone-staring crowds.Exited the bridge onto the Battery trail and glimpsed my watch, I had a solid finish within reach. Last set of steps down to the Warming Hut. All the muscle memories from NPSF hill-day repeats on these stairs clicked and it felt like I was dancing on the wood beams, barely touching them, easily dodging tourists. After the stairs, just the gravel flats to Crissy field. I’d pushed all my strong points, successfully executed Krissi’s plan and was down to a shuffling jog on this last slog. Barely buoyed by the remaining cheering spectators, I came around the last gentle bend and could see the North Face finish line arch. Felt myself smiling.I saw my father in his blue jacket and flat cap, moments before he saw me and started running to join me, asking me how I was doing, taking photos.Turned the tight hard-right onto the field and reminded myself to watch out for the uneven terrain. Kicked it as hard as I could without risking a finish line fall or twisted ankle(4, Photo: Hasan). The cheers got louder. The announcer got my name right. Bounded across the finish line and accepted my medal. Bowed my head in gratitude and raised my fist in defiant victory(1, Photo: Hasan).I’d done it. I am an #ultrarunner.Epilogue: my dad had brought me a dry shirt and a long-sleeve zip. I changed to stay warm, picked up a veggie burger & cheese fries, found a bunch of #NovemberProjectpals, and #NPSF#TrailRunningfriends Bryan, Krissi, and Vivek who were nearby. The sky turned to cotton candy(5).#ultra#runner#UltraRunning#WorkHardDreamBigDoCoolShit#InstaRunner#TrailRunner#Marin#MarinHeadlands#CardiacHill#SCATrail#CrissyField#SanFrancisco#GrassrootsGear#NovemberProjectSF#IDidIt#50kfinish#50kfinisher#FirstUltra#FirstUltraMarathon#2019_320#20191116#latergram#nofilter

Thanks to #TheNorthFace for allowing us early morning use of their space! This was my first time teaching a full one hour yoga class on my own indoors (having taught outdoors over the summer), as well as first time teaching NPSF as a whole.I came up with a custom routine (and a new playlist) that I thought would suit NPSFs abilities & challenges, provide a good workout, but perhaps most importantly help people connect with themselves, and hopefully find a sense of peace & calm amongst everything happening at the time.Interestingly, though anxious at the start, I found myself also feeling more peaceful and calm as the class proceeded. Afterwards I was just grateful I was able to provide and serve a community which has inspired and helped me so much.Learning to teach yoga and share that has been one of the highlights of 2017. My training @YogaFlowSF also left me with more questions than answers, personal and universal, that I know I will be spending more time thinking about in the coming years. Thanks to #TheNorthFace for allowing us early morning use of their space!

This was my first time teaching a full one hour yoga class on my own indoors (having taught outdoors over the summer), as well as first time teaching NPSF as a whole.

I came up with a custom routine (and a new playlist) that I thought would suit NPSFs abilities & challenges, provide a good workout, but perhaps most importantly help people connect with themselves, and hopefully find a sense of peace & calm amongst everything happening at the time.

Interestingly, though anxious at the start, I found myself also feeling more peaceful and calm as the class proceeded. Afterwards I was just grateful I was able to provide and serve a community which has inspired and helped me so much.

Learning to teach yoga and share that has been one of the highlights of 2017. My training @YogaFlowSF also left me with more questions than answers, personal and universal, that I know I will be spending more time thinking about in the coming years. Less than twenty minutes later I made it to the summit. Clear skies overhead, the sun had ducked behind a cloud layer just above the horizon. This is my second #NP_PhotoContest entry. From the profile you’d think I was part elf.I’m standing in the same spot as two days ago, and yet, this morning began very differently. Alone, unmotivated, barely motivated, running, then losing nearly half an hour looking for a restroom, almost quitting and turning back, pressing on to complete a couple of miles, up to the edge of the crater, and having gone that far, finally motivated to push all the way up inside to the top.In that moment, beyond gratitude, I felt a growing sense of self-reliance, and some relief from self-doubt.Thanks to running with #NovemberProject, I’ve learned to get up in darkness and wear a headlamp when running before dawn. Thanks to running trails with #NPSF friends (often at #SFRC), I’ve learned to wear a buff to wipe my brow, carry enough water for the roundtrip, and pack a snack just in case.Running alone in the dark is still a challenge. There’s always an inside voice of doubt, speaking up at even a hint of exhaustion, tiredness, or breathing difficulty. I’ve learned to live above it by listening to it rather than rejecting it. By allowing myself the option to turn around, in a mile or two, it feels heard. And when that mile or two comes, the voice is almost always completely gone, replaced by feelings of momentum and self-confidence.About halfway to the summit I saw a #grassrootsgear orange tanktop coming the other way and met Jessie & her friend from NovemberProjectDC! A pleasant surprise among the throngs of tourists. We stopped to take a photo together.Standing there at the Diamond Head Summit, I waited for the sun to continue rising above the clouds, still low enough to cast a yellow orange glow. On the last lap just before the Scott street climb, I heard the last part of one of Zip's bounces in my head:Zipin: Will you ever quit?NPSFs: No, we want some mo', we want some mo', we want some mo'.And that powered my last hike up Scott street, to my fastest downhill segment of the day, and a more than 2x faster sprint up the steps than the earlier laps.Just grateful to finish PR Wednesday today to close out my most strenuous month of racing ever. Unseasonably warm and dry. Warmest PR Wednesday I remember. No music for the early gang PR Wednesday, and was much faster than last month's 5:30 PR Wednesday.Skipped the in-betweeners abs workout, to drink a bunch of water, eat a clif blok, and easy run to the Fillmore Starbucks for a pitstop.Decided to try listening to music during the 6:30 PR Wednesday but was only 22 seconds faster than the 5:30 run, yet exactly tying my 6:30 time last month. By the clock, the music didn’t seem to make much (if any) difference, even though it felt like it did.Previously: tantek.com/2017/270/t1/npsf-double-pr-wednesday

Unseasonably warm and dry. Warmest PR Wednesday I remember.

No music for the early gang PR Wednesday, and was much faster than last month's 5:30 PR Wednesday.

Skipped the in-betweeners abs workout, to drink a bunch of water, eat a clif blok, and easy run to the Fillmore Starbucks for a pitstop.

Decided to try listening to music during the 6:30 PR Wednesday but was only 22 seconds faster than the 5:30 run, yet exactly tying my 6:30 time last month. It was two days before I was to co-teach my first public Vinyasa yoga class as part of my last weekend of YTT, graduating that Sunday after co-teaching a second class. Yoga sequences and philosophical challenges occupied my thoughts nearly every waking minute. Still do.I am imperfect. Grateful for the humility reminder, and optimism that I can do better in the future.I am old(er). Old enough to be grateful for every day. Old enough to feel holes in my heart every day from the losses of too many younger friends. Old enough to fill those holes with memories of our shared times, and intentions to live and pass on their joy, happiness, energy, care, and positivity towards others.I am strong(er). Strong enough to know the barriers inside are often bigger than the barriers outside.I am grateful. For too much to list. Enough to remind myself in moments of craving or emptiness.I am hopeful, for the potential of every moment, for the positive changes we can make inside, and by our actions, outside, while being present in every moment, appreciating what is.I have a lot on my mind.

Mount Davidson view after running@Nov_Project_SFHillsRunning uphill is still the hardest for me to run, though with sustained effort and practice I am slowly getting better at it. I climbed over 2000' just two days ago, the combined total from double-PR Wednesday^1@Nov_Project_SFand evening run/hikes to finish out the Strava Mt. Everest Running Climbing Challenge for the month of May^2. Thanks to a restday yesterday and enough sleep last night, my legs felt fine (not sore) on the hills this morning.I know that “proper” training for a marathon requires increasing distance, both in long runs, and total weekly miles. Since uphill is my weakpoint, I’m focusing my training on that, and especially on trails since they are more forgiving (thus more body sustainable) than running on the road. Rather than total miles, I’m focusing on time spent at high-effort running. That feels more right for my body, and if my PR Wednesday improvement over the past two months is any indication, the right thing for me to do too.Now that I have Saturdays again, I will be running SFRC every Saturday morning that I’m in SF, doing my long runs on trails as well. I’ll eventually do at least one longish run (maybe 16-18 miles?) on road just to get used to doing so in the shoes I plan to wear for the race. Also planning to do at least a few track workouts to mix-in some speedwork. For now I’m happy with the progress I’ve made, both in the past few months and the past few years running with@Nov_Project_SF., and for the increased body awareness from yoga teacher training^3 that has really helped me consciously keep track of how my body feels while running, and adjust breathing, posture, pace, stride, etc. accordingly. As always, grateful to running/fitness/yoga friends, teachers, and communities (@Nov_Project@missioncliffs@YogaFlowSF) whose support has been essential to reinforcing regular sustainable physical practices.^1.tantek.com/2017/151/t1/npsf-pr-wednesday-faster^2.tantek.com/2017/151/t3/complete-everest-cilmbing-challenge^3.tantek.com/2017/148/t1/yoga-teachers#novemberproject#run#runner#runners#trailrun#mountain#hill#twinpeaks#sanfrancisco#sf#california#view#nofilter

Then we made a tree. 📷@butteronadonut#nofilterThis was a tough one. I learned a few weeks ago@nov_project_sfthat I can't run very far breathing low 40s Fahrenheit air (first PR Wednesday DNF after two laps).Despite several laps and other warmup drills this morning, I had to wear a buff covering my mouth and nose the whole time. Then I ran a mile, breathing through the buff the entire way til it slipped down when I sprinted the final straight with everything I had left.It took me 7 minutes just to complete the first three laps, each much slower than 2 min per.I knew that I still had a chance at a sub 2 min lap if I could focus on breathing first and picking up the pace second. I counted down every 100 on that last 400, consciously picking up the pace on each segment. As I rounded the final curve, another guy doing his own thing on the track passed me, but not running that much faster. Somehow that helped and I picked up the pace another notch. When I reached the final straight I already knew that fourth lap would be the fastest I'd run today. I was breathing fine so I pushed harder, kicked harder, swung my arms farther and started gaining on that mystery guy.We had started our timed mile on even :00 seconds on a clock inside the track at the start, and I saw the seconds read :58 as I reached the finish. I heard someone yell “Made it by a second!” As I crossed the finish line.8:59. A lot slower than my 7:23 PR. But sub-9 was my goal today and I'm happy with it. Never done a mile flat out in 42F before and that was my first since knee recovery.
