Tantek ()'s status on Monday, 09-Aug-2021 16:00:00 EDT Tantek Finished #RodeoValley 30k #trailRace in 5:10:43 on Saturday. In the photo I’m massaging a midsection cramp while power hiking uphill, and grinning because I knew I was almost at the top of the last big climb of the course.
First race post lockdown was exciting, fun, steady, strong, until a downhill trip (no fall) broke my momentum, strained the right leg/glute, and killed the appetite. Struggled and pushed thru remaining climbs to finish strong on the final downhill without injury, 26s longer than 2018.
Great starting with 50k runners Bryan & Eliza, and having pal Erika run me in the last 4 miles (also took this 📷) and share salty snacks, a needed boost.
Taking notes as memories resurface. Processing everything & how each section went, insights gained, and lessons learned.

Tantek ()'s status on Wednesday, 20-Jan-2021 02:34:00 EST Tantek #trailTuesdayThrowback to Saturday’s first Marin #trailRun of the year, masked & distanced on a beautiful #Junuary day. Chilly in Tennessee Valley as the sun crested the hills, poking through the eucalyptus[2]. After ascending Fox trail[3], it was warmer than any winter’s day. Nice breeze running down Coastal Fire Road[1 📷 @BryanTing] to Muir beach.
We took Redwood Creek to Miwok into the cool forest canopy, paused for a moment[4], then continued on our way.[5 📷 @BryanTing]

Tantek ()'s status on Monday, 13-Jan-2020 15:11:00 EST Tantek Sunday 1 year ago: 15km (https://tantek.com/t4yV2), #Sunday yesterday: 16mi & 4500' the day after 12mi & 2400' (https://tantek.com/t54Z2). @BryanTing and I hiked/ran a double Dipsea, starting at Old Mill Park in Mill Valley up the legendary #DipseaSteps, onto the #Dipsea #trail through Muir Woods (with a brief detour to Deer Park Fire Road) up to Cardiac Hill(1), down to Stinson Beach(2, and 3 📷 #selfie by Bryan).
We took a quick break to eat at the Parkside Snack Bar, and then started our hike/run back. At one of the viewing spots just before Cardiac the clouds were looking particularly beautifully chaotic(4). Returning to Cardiac Hill, the sky was fully overcast, and rain clouds were visible over the ocean, some already dumping onto the water(5).
By the time we had climbed down and back out of Muir Woods and up to Panoramic Highway, the sky had cleared for us again, the sun warming us and lighting our way(6). We descended back down into Mill Valley, ran down the Dipsea steps to Old Mill Park, and finished where we started. 16 miles, not bad for a day two run.

Tantek ()'s status on Monday, 13-Jan-2020 02:16:00 EST Tantek #SFRC yesterday, 12 miles and ~2500' climbed. Beautiful day, started in Tennessee Valley Parking lot, just after 08:00. Marincello trail was lined with fresh green grasses(1) from recent rains. Alta trail’s forest pretty as ever(2). Noticed a spot on SCA trail where trees on either side framed the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance(3), before running to SCA look out point for a view of San Francisco, and the sun lighting up the bay(4).
At the peak of Slacker trail, I could just make out Rodeo lagoon, and Rodeo beach(5). Running down to the beach, the sun glistened off the water, backlighting a fisherman and a few surfers(6). On the Coastal trail climb, a seemingly unreachable cove, secluded yet visible from above, with an inviting beach(7). Hiking up to Hill 88, looked back down at Rodeo Beach(8). Returning on Old Springs trail, caught a view of Tenneessee Valley down to the beach(9).
Finished the SFRC loop of the week and joined friends at Good Earth for a sandwich.

Tantek ()'s status on Sunday, 05-Jan-2020 02:58:00 EST Tantek ⛰🏃🏻♂️ First #SFRC of the year today, 13.5 miles ✅ Finished first full route since #ECSCA, and longest run since too! It was a struggle TBH, leg muscles still tired from Tuesday’s Tam PR (tantek.com/t54M2), and an intense Thursday Baptiste yoga class. Thanks to #running pal Whitney for keeping us going!
Beautiful day, mostly blue sky, brilliant #sunshine lighting up a clear sky(2). Ran up Fox trail to views of the Pacific Ocean among green Marin hills on either side of Tennessee Valley(1).
Almost missed a pretty purple salamander on Coastal Fire road(3) on the way down toward Muir Beach with a mix of blue & green waters(4). It was quite muddy on the descent, thick, sticky mud which we had to carefully step through & around(5).
The climb up Dias Ridge was quite a slog, alternating running and walking. Whitney waited for me at the top of the ridge line where we captured photos of dramatic clouds above and passing in front of Mount Tam(6 📷 Whitney). I looked back to take in one more view of the Pacific Ocean(7) before continuing eventually onto Miwok, back to Tennessee valley and to our start.

15km & ~2k' in #Marin 8/31 to finish #August at 216km & 7116m. Grateful for a month of consistent training at home.
Traveling a lot soon — HMU to #run in Portland @XOXO, Fukuoka @W3C #TPAC2019, Amsterdam @IndieWebCamp #ViewSource, NYC & Brighton IndieWebCamps, London #MozFest, St. Louis @WordCampUS #WCUS!
August was also a monthly distance running PR and my second highest vertical climbing month after last October’s 207km & 8932m (also only my second time running 200km+ or climbing 5km+ in any month).
Got a late start that morning and drove myself directly to the Tennessee Valley parking lot. Having forgotten to check the #SFRC route direction, I ran the opposite way again, up Fox with less fog(2) than last week, down Coastal to an ominously overcast Muir Beach(3). Touched the water(4) and noticed blue skies in the distance to the Northwest(5). I cut the route short via the beautiful Middle Green Gulch trail up to Coyote Ridge. From the Coyotoe Ridge peak(6) I could see the North side of Muir beach, and a thin blue line of clear Pacific Ocean over the clouds(1). Looking south the city was still covered by fog, just a few buildings and Sutro tower poking through(7). Ran back down Miwok(8) to the Tennessee Valley parking lot and up/down a bit of Marincello to reach 15km.
I’ll be making good use of the few September and October mornings I’m home and joining up with runners (especially on trails) on my travels when missing Marin #trails(9).

Tantek ()'s status on Saturday, 08-Jun-2019 18:55:00 EDT Tantek 10+ miles at #SFRCtoday. #screentimevs #greentime. Have you gone outside today and filled your view with #green? (Hey@btconffriends!) It’s too easy when you’re tired, to just stay inside, going through screenfuls.
Flew back from Toronto last night, woke up at 06:00, awake, but tired. Picked up some coffee, and drove solo to #SFRC. Felt ok at the very start, yet awful just half a mile in. Kept pushing to the Tennessee Valley parking lot for a quick pit stop. Gathered myself and took off up #Miwok, feeling exhausted after 100 meters or so. Took deeper breaths, appreciated the sunshine, the blue skies, tried to distract myself with the nice green views(1).
Made it to the Miwok cut-off and decided I wasn’t doing the full SFRC route. Deciding to cut it short provided enough of a sense of relief to push extra hard the rest of the way to Coyote Ridge. Felt encouraged by the oncoming trail runners. After they passed I heard mountain bikers creeping up behind me, on a narrow single-track with a cliff off to the left? What were they thinking? I hate to admit I was annoyed; focused it all into breathing and leaping up the trail faster than they could crank their low gears. Made it back to the main Miwok trail, breathing hard, and let them pass now that there was room to do so.
Ran up Coyote Ridge to the top and took in the views of the South, tips of the #SanFranciscoskyline poking up behind the #MarinHeadlands(2), and the North, clear views of #MtTam(3). Inspired, ran down Coyote Ridge to Fox in personal record time.
Paused at the Fox and Coastal fork(4), unsure which to take. Drawn to the sea, I ran down Coastal toward the beach. Tennessee Beach was so beautiful, blue sky gradients contrasting the red brown rocks to the north(5), bands of blue ocean and frothy surf to the west(6), rising up the coarse sandy shore(7). There was still a bit of green left on the hills to the south(8).
#Runningback along the valley trail, I looked back to admire the lagoon ringed by lush greenery, the Pacific in the distance(9). As I turned, the sunlight glistening on the water caught my eye(10).

Tantek ()'s status on Monday, 03-Jun-2019 05:29:00 EDT Tantek 9 days ago, 13+ miles & 2500' at the final May #SFRC #trailrun. May had many ups & downs, emotionally & literally like this #run. Started at Tennessee Valley, ran up Miwok to beautiful green valley views (1) and distant bridges (2). Turned left onto Dias Ridge, ran freely downhill til I tripped & fell.
Somehow reacted quickly enough to roll towards the grassy edge, scraping only my right hand on gravel. Immediately got back up and kept running. Reached #Muirbeach (3), touched the #surf (4). Ran back up Coastal, down Fox, to the parking lot, just short of 13. Ran up #Marincello to finish my #trail #halfmarathon (5).
Tough but solid just two days after a Tam run, during which I also fell (down a ravine!) but that's another story.

Tantek ()'s status on Monday, 08-Oct-2018 12:54:00 EDT Tantek Beautiful day at #SFRC this past Saturday. Practiced a few #ECSCA 50k trails: Fox, Coastal Fire, Marincello, Bobcat.
1. Up Fox taking in a westward view
2. Down Coastal Fire Road looking south, a low hanging cloud with a surreal reflection on the ocean
3. Muir Beach
4. Touching the surf
5. A furry caterpillar seen going back up Coastal Fire Road
6. Top of Fox trail before sprinting down to Tennessee Valley
7. Up Marincello looking East
8. Down Bobcat toward Alta (saw a baby snake!) with glimpses of downtown San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Sutro tower on the distant horizon.
~14.3 miles, 2900'+. Legs felt pretty good despite climbing 1000'+ at #NPSF Friday hills the day before. Finally broke 100+ miles in the past 30 days. Six weeks til my first 50k.
