In the photo I’m massaging a midsection cramp while power hiking uphill, and grinning because I knew I was almost at the top of the last big climb of the course.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />First race post lockdown was exciting, fun, steady, strong, until a downhill trip (no fall) broke my momentum, strained the right leg/glute, and killed the appetite. Struggled and pushed thru remaining climbs to finish strong on the final downhill without injury, 26s longer than 2018.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Great starting with 50k runners Bryan & Eliza, and having pal Erika run me in the last 4 miles (also took this 📷) and share salty snacks, a needed boost.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Taking notes as memories resurface. In memory of #<span class="p-category auto-tag">NPSF</span> hills I ran to Twin Peaks today[1], 25min (or a bit less) of all uphill just to start — something that was beyond my reach back then. <br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Starting at Oak Street I caught a sign in a window[2] I hadn’t seen before, encouraging folks to:<br class="auto-break" />* see black women<br class="auto-break" />* hear black women<br class="auto-break" />* trust black women<br class="auto-break" />* love black women<br class="auto-break" />* protect black women<br class="auto-break" />* pay black women<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />After running up Ashbury to Clayton to Twin Peaks Boulevard and climbing to the summit & both peaks, I turned around to see a clear view of Sutro Tower, Mt Tam, and the Golden Gate Bridge from the South Peak[3]. On the return run, I spotted a pair of apparent princesses in pink dresses strolling along, brightly lit by the brilliant setting sun[4], along the adjacent road blocked to motor traffic. As I climbed the North Peak, I saw them again up ahead, strolling in the middle of the road without a care in the world[5].<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Reaching the top of the North Peak, I noticed Market Street’s streetlamps had been lit, the sunset barely lighting up a few blocks of downtown[6]. Made it back to the Twin Peaks Summit as the sun dropped toward the Pacific Ocean, bathing everything nearby in orange light[7].<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Ran down the hill at an easy pace, legs & feet tired after yesterday’s longer run. Grateful for regular runs up Twin Peaks, where 25 minutes is the start, rather than the whole workout.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />#<span class="p-category auto-tag">trail</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">runner</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">runners</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trailRunner</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trailRun</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">ultraRunner</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">SF</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">SanFrancisco</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">hilliversary</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">NovemberProjectSF</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">NovemberProject</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">TwinPeaks</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">50ktraining</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">50mileTraining</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">optOutside</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">fromWhereIRun</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">noFilter</span><br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Previously, previously, previously: <br class="auto-break" />* <a class="auto-link" href="https://tantek.com/2020/017/t2/six-years-ago-npsf-hills">https://tantek.com/2020/017/t2/six-years-ago-npsf-hills</a><br class="auto-break" />* <a class="auto-link" href="https://tantek.com/2016/017/t1/two-years-ago-first-npsf-hillsforbreakfast">https://tantek.com/2016/017/t1/two-years-ago-first-npsf-hillsforbreakfast</a><br class="auto-break" />* <a class="auto-link" href="https://tantek.com/2014/017/t1/first-novemberprojectsf-hillsforbreakfast">https://tantek.com/2014/017/t1/first-novemberprojectsf-hillsforbreakfast</a>http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/post2021-01-18T07:46:00+00:002021-01-18T07:46:00+00:00http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/personhttp://tantek.com/Tantek San Francisco, CA tag:status.blaise.ca,2021-01-18:objectType=thread:nonce=60179a310d7dec33http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/notehttps://tantek.com/2019/319/t1/this-is-50k-trailraceNew note by <a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_x2TRKAkHrIvYgSXLMRZSMGo1uUrxBQRh2mB-2m5nIH0.jpg"></a>⛰🏃🏻♂️ This is it. #<span class="p-category auto-tag">50ktraining</span> & waiting just under a year for tomorrow’s 2nd chance <a class="auto-link h-cassis-username" href="https://twitter.com/thenorthfaceECS">@thenorthfaceECS</a> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">ECSCA</span> 50k #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trailrace</span>. Ran back down Miwok(8) to the Tennessee Valley parking lot and up/down a bit of Marincello to reach 15km.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />I’ll be making good use of the few September and October mornings I’m home and joining up with runners (especially on trails) on my travels when missing Marin #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trails</span>(9).<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />#<span class="p-category auto-tag">runner</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">MarinHeadlands</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trail</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trailrun</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">50ktraining</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">ultratraining</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">optoutside</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">getoutside</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">fog</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">KarlTheFog</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">Muirbeach</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">2019_243</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">20190831</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">Saturday</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">latergram</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">nofilter</span><br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Previous Saturday: <a class="auto-link" href="https://tantek.com/2019/237/t1/fog-forests-sunshine-cardiac-hill">https://tantek.com/2019/237/t1/fog-forests-sunshine-cardiac-hill</a>http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/post2019-09-02T06:33:00+00:002019-09-02T06:33:00+00:00http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/personhttp://tantek.com/Tantek San Francisco, CA tag:status.blaise.ca,2019-09-02:objectType=thread:nonce=196e5ff0a7d68714http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/notehttps://tantek.com/2019/231/t2/sunday-longrun-tired-legsNew note by <a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_p60wOcyZvJQMbiSCSd3O2v-yinB-zyFq3ANQDsLaA3M.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_7sBX6_EcxR8hkrN2M86PefMO6m_zUuCPOcXDW6ILQP0.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_kosLWGoD73Zspoe3mjAeaWcufxCXMZCx1AmmXakRnFE.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_k0lCa9fnps_B3eTJraCA-I571W6gVPKL2dHBpiX5yMw.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_6x6BehmsJjpxyn4NcUFyh5HbSWT3YX2M9_8pwu7TR-s.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_QT3aP66qcd50w0UtEjFF8VSmVWFfE1HSc1ngwBkkJuw.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_Wu4XydyRcYgCoEQopa4pCPq7RQOXsYz8JGJBPhMLgcQ.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/476_iZbcerSgPdERdoe6XsSRToxjTVzAx2BszP1b-BfiyuU.jpg"></a>🌞🌳🌊🌁 #<span class="p-category auto-tag">Sunday</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">longrun</span>! Tam almost two weeks ago with pal Hannah (1). The #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trails</span> are not (2) as green as they were two months ago (<a class="auto-link" href="http://tantek.com/t4zc1">tantek.com/t4zc1</a>). After an 88:31 climb (tied my 2nd fastest time) to Mt. Tam’s East peak summit, I could barely see the tiny San Franisco skyline poking through a thick fog blanket (3). Looking East the sun was rising far above the horizon, already well on its way at 7:30am (4).<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Chasing Hannah back down the hill was faster than a month ago, setting a PR on the first 1.6 miles of steep technical descent. With a gentler downhill, Hannah ran ahead and disappeared. I settled into a good rhythm and pace of my own, having become more familiar with these trails.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />While enjoying the Tenderfoot trail forest, I noticed the ground felt squishier from the recent rains. The trail narrowed with a hill on one side and ravine on the other. Suddenly the earth gave way under my right foot, I felt lower body start to spin and fall downward in slow motion, impact the side of the ravine, and start sliding.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />I remember thinking, how far am I going to slide, followed shortly by, I have to stop! I spun to press against the hill, threw my arms up, dug my hands & fingers into the soft earth, slowing and stopping the slide. Took a few seconds to realize what happened, spit out some mud, and balance myself against the side of the hill to look up.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />I’d slid ~20-30 feet down into the ravine. Nothing felt broken. I looked down and couldn't really see how far down I’d have to go. Looking back up I leaned my body into the side of the hill and slowly crawled up, keeping in contact. Made it back to the trail. Collected myself, scraped most of the mud off myself and my handheld water bottle, clearing off the mud at the top so I could still drink what was left. Another self-inspection, lots of scrapes from left forearm, to thigh, and knee which was bleeding but didn’t hurt. Shock, I’m sure.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Ran the rest of the trail, and onto Cascade road. I could start to feel the dirt stinging in my skin. Made it back to Equator coffee in downtown Mill Valley where Hannah was waiting. She checked to make sure I was ok, then took a photo at my request (5). Not pictured: my forearms muddy from elbow to wrist.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />After wiping off a bit more, I drove us back to the city, went home, and scrubbed off all the mud & dirt in the shower. Scrapes & bruises, nothing broken, nothing twisted or strained.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />Despite the fall, I set my second fastest time for the Mt. Tam Loop.<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />#<span class="p-category auto-tag">MountTam</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">Marin</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trail</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trailrun</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">run</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">TemelpaTrail</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">MtTamEastPeak</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">50ktraining</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">optoutside</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">getoutside</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">wakeupthesun</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">befierce</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">pushyourself</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trailrash</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">facethemountain</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">fitstrongfierce</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">latergram</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">Thursday</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">TrailThursday</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">PRThursday</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">nofilter</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">latergram</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">20190523</span>http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/post2019-06-05T04:23:00+00:002019-06-05T04:23:00+00:00http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/personhttp://tantek.com/Tantek San Francisco, CA tag:status.blaise.ca,2019-06-05:objectType=thread:nonce=9855dc3dfd182564http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/notehttps://tantek.com/2019/154/t1/may-sfrc-trailrun-ups-downsNew note by <a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/7679884_aQs7Uq9JyEFBzANqT6263szLpPdnggsVYtGon0M4Vao.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/7679884_AHx0kshgTEQVVlwjHCS7Q6KkMjTYeDfIBqYUjwEa8ls.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/7679884_TeMLscsbNTiRaJHEUFmbWABchcTSObQz0ihyrilQ8mU.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/7679884_HVcTxHihOeIUNnFoRP9fMpJDMWM41Z0CIqTn5OAwrkk.jpg"></a><a class="auto-link figure u-bridgy-flickr-photo" href="https://fastly.4sqi.net/img/general/original/7679884_ZOW6TlTIYltIGvGrplM_hKso78OZXcojrynhQOuabLo.jpg"></a>9 days ago, 13+ miles & 2500' at the final May #<span class="p-category auto-tag">SFRC</span> #<span class="p-category auto-tag">trailrun</span>. Chased <a class="auto-link h-cassis-username" href="https://twitter.com/BryanTing">@BryanTing</a> once again to an uphill PR (sub-90min!), just made the 7:22 sunrise and sat on the rocks(1). Clear skies(2) from the start, faint streaks of orange before sunrise(3). Clear gradients 11 minutes before(4) sunrise, a leading orange glow 7 minutes before(5). Finally, sunrise from the door of the hut at the top(6), and a view from the rocks of the green hills below(7).<br class="auto-break" /><br class="auto-break" />8.5 miles before 9 (2500+' climbed).
